#Imagine3.0 won't start

I am trying to get Imagine 3.0 to run on a 486DX-33 with 4meg Ram, impossible ? I'm using EMM386.EXE, so I used the -noxms switch, but nothing happened. Suggestions, comments, patches…?

Hi Chris, I had the same problem when I first tried to run Imagine, only I was using 386Max as a mem. manager. I was told by the folks at imagine to remove all memory managers from the system and it worked :-). Try going into your Config.sys and rem out the EMM386 and see what happens. Mine will run with EMM386 but with it runing Imagine will only recognize 11 of the 20 meg of memory I have. Hope this helps, Mi hael W. Towe Falcon Video Productions Santee Ca.

Michael, I tried your suggestion. I removed EMM386.EXE from the config.sys and now Imagine will start, but if you try to do something it will crash. Any other suggestions ? Chris

Any other suggestions ?<<<< Hmmmmm…… Not quite shure where to go from here……you mentioned in the last post that you were running with only 4 meg of RAM. This could be the problem I think Imagine requires at least 8 meg. But I could be wrong. Hey Impulse feel free to jump in here anytime. Chris, are you running with no memory manager now??

Michael, I believe your right about my lack of RAM. I have decided to give up on Imagine until I can afford to upgrade my machine so it can adequately deal with a program like Imagine. Thanks for taking time to help me, I appreciate it. Chris

Chris, Check to see if your running smart drive for windows, it sucks up 2 megs of memory, so you still are short on resources if you are running this program. Also, 4 megs is the bare "BARE" minimum to make Imagine run, I doubt you will be able to do much with this low memory amout, 8 megs seems to work fine, and 16 megs is the bestr. Mike

My machine just isn't up to the task of running Imagine. I'll have to try Imagine again in the future when I have a machine with more muscle. Thanks for your help. Chris, My suggestion is to get more ram. My 486DX2-66 didn't even get as far as you are. I put in 16 megs instead of 4 and Imagine flies. -Richard

Michael, to make the confusion even worse <g> I have 386Max and Imagine works fine. You just have to remove DPMI before you run IM. I have tried to boot without anything (only mouse driver). The only difference is that I have a little more memory available and the HD has a lot more to do since there is no disk cache program. Rendering time is exactly the same (I have compared several situations). -David

Hi David, Well since I have every thing running on my system like it should I think I will refrain from screwing with anything 🙂 Thanks for the reply though, it's nice to know that if I want to put 386MAX back in ther is a way to get it to work.
