3D Studio for Win4
16 messages in this thread
Good question. I'll follow with another! How about 3D Studio optimized for
Windows 4.0? I hope so.. Chicago will be released (supposedly) by the end of
the year, and will be able to run Dos programs in virtual shells. How will 3DS
handle this environment?

Autodesk will not tell you anything about what to expect from future products.
On another note:
>> Chicago will be released (supposedly) by the end of the year <<
What will Chicago offer you that OS/2 2.1 does not offer NOW? I am not trying
to push OS/2, I am just trying to understand the fascination with Microsoft
OSs, quasi-OSs, and vapor OSs.
I only have one machine. I am rendering to the PAR while I type up this
message and upload with WinCIM. What is _your_ machine doing? <g>
Be prepared for Chicago to go through a few revisions before the kinks are
worked out. OS/2 has been through its gorky phaze and is now delivering.

Can't understand it neither. Which I understand is the lack of support for OS/2
and I think that is the cause of Windows success.
Reading again the lines above… mmmh, I would better say that I can't
understand how the market evolves in anyway. For example: Intel join forces
with HP for its P7. Translated: Intel doesn't have a clue about how the P7 is
going to be. You look at mags (mmmh, did I hear Ziff-Davis? 🙂 and get the
impression that the Intel has their chips planned until the year 2005, as well
as Microsoft with its line of operating systems. The reality: they don't have a
clue about how things are going to develop. Now I understand, we are in the
hands of Bill Gates and the Intel board, the Hitler and the Gestapo of the
business computer world <G>
I am wondering how anything could be done in this vapor industry <sigh>

Yep. That pretty much nails it. I think some developers are kicking
themselves for hesitating on OS/2 development in the past since there are now
several million users. I realize that the OS/2 base is a fraction of the
Micosoft base, but that many users will still make an application development
company some money.
I thought Geoworks was a great idea: almost pure assembly code making it
lightning fast (what a great new concept! ;-), but when I tried it on my
uncle's computer I understood. It looked like it designed by the folks at
romper room.

PS: I want a multi-threaded 3DS for OS/2.
Geoworks, Geoworks… ah! You mean _that_ "thing" <G>
No matter if a an OS market share is small when compared to Windows. If you are
the only guy producing outstanding applications, you can launch your program to
the first place in the ranking. It is not only a good device of getting
people's attention, but also for getting market share quickly. Peopl are dying
for good native 32bit applications. If you give them what they want, they will
forget quickly about Microsoft, Lotus and Wordperfect (well, it is not that
easy but you get the idea 🙂
Maybe what OS/2 really needs is one of the Great and Classic Big Applications
running on it and attract costumers by using niches. Think about AutoCAD or
Flight Simulator <G> Seriously, I think that most people here will jump to any
OS as soon as it gives them 5 seconds less in the renderings 🙂

James, are you based in Atlanta? If so I wouldn't mind checking out the PAR
and how it works. Brent Bonet – POP! Multimedia Atlanta
Not unless there is an Atlanta, Michigan. 🙂
I am in Kalamazoo, MI — southwest corner of the mitten. Stop by any time! I
will be glad to show it to you!! 🙂

No I'm not in Atlanta, MI but I'm originally from Flint…been in Atlanta for
nine years…Cheers.. Brent Bonet – POP! Multimedia Atlanta
>> I'm originally from Flint <<
No kidding! I am originally from Lapeer! They have a saying in Lapeer . . .
Q: What do you do in Lapeer for fun?
A: Go to Flint!

No offense, and I don't want to start an OS-War, but OS/2 only works
well on very smoothly configured machines. Sure, I've seen it run on a PCI
system, but I've also seen it crash, irregularly, on about 20 more PCI systems.
Same with a number of VLBs, and a number of graphics cards, even a number of
BIOS'.
I've -never- had trouble with Windows excepting for some small
hair-pulling trying to get WfWg 3.11 on a Novell network. But now that runs
smooth as silk… so, that's -MY- two cents on OS/2.
Personally, I'd like to see Gary program an OS. I bet it would work
better, look better, and be less buggy. And I wouldn't put any pennies in the
pocket of Nasal Gates.
>>but OS/2 only works well on very smoothly configured machines<<
Well, I take that as a compliment. It runs fine on mine!!
I think the Yost folks would do a GREAT operating system. Here is my vote.

As an OS/2 user, do you think it's a totally viable way to go (using 3DS)? I'll
gladly switch, if I can retain compatability with my other software and
drivers. I tried installing OS/2 once, and didn't spend a whole lot of time
with it, but the time I did spend, I ran into driver nightmare. Especially with
sound cards, etc. The windows shell also seemed to be exceptionally flaky, and
I NEED to use a lot of software written for windows (specifically MIDI and
digital recording stuff). your comments would be very appreciated!
Thanks,
Adam Stern

Are you sure you want to get me started??
OS/2 is not for the faint of heart. And you are right — drives can be a pain.
No, not everything is compatible. The point in my response was that there will
be compatiblity issues with ANY new OS. OS/2 has been around, and for that it
has an edge on the competition.
The switch from CP/M was not easy for those who invested in it. I am just glad
we are not using it now because those people felt it was "too hard" to get DOS
to work with their existing CP/M apps.
I hope I did not get too serious for you. If the software/hardware you need is
not available for OS/2 then do not use it. Always do what works the best! 🙂

COOL,
Another OS/2 for/against thread. We gotta have one every couple of months. <G>
I'm not getting suckered into this thread again. <G>

Me neither, but it is good to see….

Very True. Thanks for the comments. 🙂
