CD-ROM w/1.3 WB Help

Thanks Michael , maybe someone else out there knows something….
How about it, does anyone else know anything about a CD-Rom driver that will
work with 1.3 WB. If so, drop me a note…

I just dug out a disc from a company called Canadian Prototype Replicas.
It's a set of CD Rom drivers for SCSI drives and the package states that
it will work with the CBM590 SCSI controller, which, if memory serves, was
the add on unit for the A500. I've just checked the docs. which state that
the CDROM-FS File system will work with ANY AMIGA.
It's yours for the asking. I'm in the U.K., so tell me where to send it.
If, in return, you can find me a copy of Elan Performer 2, I'll be your
friend for life. If not, don't worry (G).

I've been looking for a solution, ever since I read about the CDROM being able
to handle old software, etc. that is on CDTV discs . This article was in
AmigaWorld ( a couple of issues back ). I could have sworn the author was
talking about using the CDROM device with older (1.3) Workbenches, and
CDTV…but how can that be accomplished with 2.x Workbenches…. Maybe CDTV is
2.0… Forgive me, but I am a little behind times. I am still using an A1000
for modem work, and using my A2000 for video work, etc.

I wrote several of those CDROM articles for AmigaWorld. I don't remember
anything in particular about 1.3 or 2.0 issues, but that doesn't mean that I
didn't write about them. 🙂

I didn't think I would get a reply from an author of my favorite mag ( a
magazine that soon is seemingly going to become a pamphlet size -wise if it
gets any thinner…). I must tell you that I have associated your name with
Amigas for a long time. Thanks for the note.
Did you want to tackle the subject ? I have an A2000 with a GVP '030
Accelerator, and a 52 meg HD. I bought the Media Vision CDR-MV2 . It came with
an Asimware CDFS software driver that appears to work only with a 2.0 WB
(although Asimware notes that the "FishMarket Disc" no specific WB version to
work and that a CDTV running WB 1.3 will be able to read that same disc
"without the Asimware CDFS software installed".)
How can a specific disc run without some kind of driver installed ? 2) Do I
need a CDTV emulator or 1.3 WB compatible CDROM driver software to access a
CDTV disk (I'm referring to the article now that I am thinking now was written
by a woman, possibly ?) This article seemed to indicate that cross
compatibility did exist. 3) If I do need both 1.3 WB and 2.x WB, do I need some
kind of a board to keep both chips in my machine (and a switch) 4) does a
simple driver exist somewhere that I can use that will allow me to run the
CDROM without having to use up my precious HD space and will still work with
1.3 WB ?
I've tried downloading the AmiCD program from CIS, but it still appears to only
work with 2.X as far as I can ascertain.
AS you can probably see, I'm really confused….. and I was kind of hoping that
CDROM was just plug and play, but apparently it is not as simple as I had
hoped.

I'd be glad to help if I can. I'm not sure I understand why you need 1.3
compatibility. If you have a CDTV, it has its own drivers for reading CDROMs.
If you want to try CDTV emulation on an Amiga, I'm only familiar with the Xetec
CDROM driver software, which included extra utilities (not necessarily found in
other packages) for emulating the CDTV's unique functions. The other day, I
heard that Xetec is no longer selling their CDROM drivers. (Probably because
the guy who wrote and supported them went to work at NewTek.)
If you do want to juggle 1.3 and 2.0 ROMs, you need a little adapter board. I
forget what they called them… but I do know I have one around here
somewhere, if you'd like to buy it for a very reasonable price. 🙂

I figured I would need it because someday I envisioned giving this CDROM drive
to my daughter after I get a bigger ( multi-session, etc.) one. I was also
going to buy a few CDTV discs to use with it now and then when I give it to her
later she would be all set to go…(she has an A500 w/ 1.3 WB also)
Quick question about the 1.3/2.0 ROM adaptor board… Does it use a Hardware
switch or a software switch to toggle between the two modes ?

If you want your daughter to play CDTV, then buy a CDTV. I doubt that neither
of you will be happy with using a full-blown Amiga for these tasks. You didn't
mention her age, but will she understand things like "when it says press the
yellow button, you press the Enter key"?
The multi-start board is software-switchable, tricked by using an extra-long
three-finger boot to switch ROMs. Quick presses will simply re-boot, holding
the keys for a few seconds switches ROMs.
Thanks for the advice , John… she has an A500 which I mostly have to boot up
for her… you are probably right that it could get scary.
Well, I'm still interested in the board. If you want to give me the price on
CIS-mail, I will send you my address. I am going to put in the 2.1 chip as soon
as I get the board. Seems like you always need just one more thing before you
can start any project. 🙂

the hardware is called a ROM Switcher and DKB sells a nifty little one,
available from most mail-order houses and many dealers. I can't find the
listing for it in any of the ads (probably been a while since people
bought them in droves), so you may need to ask Dean Brown directly for
what it is called over in AmigaVendor, in their section, DKB Software.

Glad to know it was made by DKB, The same people with whom I have had a DKB
megachip on backorder for 2 months now….Something about a certain company
being stingy with the Agnus chips…. 🙂
