#UNEXPECTED STATUS

I keep getting this message "GVP SCSI device: 006, unexpected status, $45/$49".
I've changed boards, computers and hard drives and still get this message,
usually followed by the message "DH1 has a read block (or checksum) error at
block #####." (I think this is a false message because it doesn't appear unless
the other message appears. This is true whether I reformat the drive or not – I
have done both.)
It does not happen every time I use the system. Sometimes it will run for a
while before the error shows up – other times it will appear as soon as I start
an application.
The configuration is:
Amiga 4000/040/14 meg. RAM
120 meg. IDE HD – Seagate
345 meg. SCSI HD – Maxtor (7345S) – Device 6 – J302 (Power-Up Option) Removed
GVP A4008 Impact Series II SCSI Controller
FAAASTPREP V2.07
Video Toaster 4000
Y/C Plus
Bernoulli 150 Transportable – Device 3
Syquest 88 – Device 4
Sony CDU-541 CD-ROM – Device 5 – DC OFF in user startup
gvpscsi device in expansion drawer and in user startup
I talked to Maxtor and they suggested I pull J302 because, they said, the GVP
board wants to power up the drive itself. I pulled it but the problem remains.
They then suggested that I try a low level format on the drive. I did but the
problem remains. They now think the problem is with the GVP board.
I have tried other A4008 boards but the problem remains. I've moved everything
to another system but the problem remains. I've reloaded all software but the
problem remains. I have the same problem in another system with the same
configuration but not as often. I have been using this configuration with a
Quantum 525 SCSI HD for over a year and not had this problem – it is only
happening with the Maxtor drives.
I'm using these systems in a production environment and these breakdowns are
costing me money, please help!
I'd be interested to learn the answer to this one as I've got exactly the
same problem with a Maxtor and an A1291 GVP SCSI I/F which I posted here
last thrusday and haven't had an answer to.
In the mean time, I've returned the A1291 because I've had problems with
other devices too and am hoping to get the replacement this week.

Jon,
These messages typically indicate a cabling and/or termination problem on the
SCSI bus. The final answer may be anything from changing the termination on
one of the units, changing the order of the units on the SCSI chain or changing
the cable lengths. Experimentation is the only way to get to the right answer.
You could also try turning off disconnect for ALL of the drives.

Has anybody tried an active terminator (these are NOT the normal passive
terminators and cost FAR more, usually around $50-75 each) with an A1291?
One thing makes me think this might solve the "Unnexpected Status" problem
(which I have too) is that in the A1291 manual, on page 3.16 it mentions
that;
"The A1291 SCSI Kit uses 'Active Termination' to constantly (and
dynamically) adapt to the changing termination needs…."
I'm gonna try this on monday night (as I've got these terminators at work)
but if somebody has already tried, let us know the outcome so I don't
waste my time 🙂

I had this problem when I added a CD-ROM drive to my GVP SCSI-2
accelerator & HD. When I checked Disconnect Off on my hard drive using
Expert Prep, I didn't get the unexpected status message anymore. Perhaps
you should try turning DC off on your HD device 6.

If GVP Tech responds to you via e-mail please post the solution. I just
installed a G-Force 040 33mhz board in my A2000 and now I get those same types
of errors.
Unexpected status $40/$49 Device 002 – a syquest 44 meg, and also on device
003, a syquest 105… Interesting that I don't have the problem with the
quantum…
Have you tried the disconnect off command? Some drives support it, some
don't. Your Quantum probably does, your syquests don't.
