#SCSI card/speed
6 messages in this thread
I have a Toshiba XM3301 (external), which came with its Future Domain scsi
card – TMC 845 (though the VLSI chip is labelled TMC 950?).
Have just bought the MediaVision ProAudio with its Trantor T130 scsi,
rated at 690Kb/sec.
The question is should i keep the Future Domain scsi as is, or is the
Trantor faster and/or better?
I looked in Ziffnet for Labs benchmarks but could not find any. However
there is reported a utility PC Bench 7, which can be used also to test/rate
read-only disks (such as CD-ROM): see the PCMagUtilities Section 2 of
Messages (as yet I have not tracked it down). But this i assume will test
the cd-rom not the relative perfomance of the SCSI cards.
Any information?
Many thanks
Luke
The MediaVision Pro Audio Spectrum card is not a Trantor anything. 🙂
Trantor does write drivers for the PAS-16, but MediaVision designed that
SCSI port and it isn't compatible with any of the Trantor adapters.
Either the Future Domain TMC 845 or the PAS-16 is faster than your CD-ROM
drive and you won't see any difference in performance between them.
Thanks for the clarification about the PA16 scsi.
I wondered about the speed because the Tosh. cd-rom has a spec. of burst
1.5Mb/sec., but I suppose it is rather notional, and the average speed of
150kb/sec is the working one.
Since Trantor wrote the drivers for the PA16, does it mean that any updated
drivers that you release will remain compatible?

Future PAS CD-ROM drivers will usually support all previous drives as well
as adding support for newer drives. Does that make sense? <g>
If you've got things working, just keep them as is, I would say- both
adapters are much faster than your CD-ROM. Leave well enough alone!

You mean if it ain't broke don't fix it!
Yes! especially with all the interrupts, jumps and device drivers that fly
about. When will DOS/Windows become as intelligent as the Mac!
Thanks
