#repeating keys/tracks
7 messages in this thread
I've had this question in my mind for quite sometime, and finally got around to
asking. I've done a little animating skeletons and other "walking" objects,
but haven't had any luck looping/repeating only certain parts of the tracks.
For example…
Let's say that I wanted to make my skeleton/man stand up from a sitting
position and than walk. I want to be able to repeat the walking keys WITHOUT
repeating the standup keys. I know that I can waste time by creating a stand
in object to swap out upon him standing and looping its walk sequence, but that
seems redundat. Isn't there an easy way to tell 3ds which specific keys I want
to repeat?
I haven't had any luck doing it, and was wondering if anyone else had any
ideas. No emergency, it was just one of those "how would you do that" type
deals when pondering animation. Thanks!

What a coincidence!! I got on to mention the same thing. I have
a character that needs to walk on to the screen (about 10 steps)
then stop. I have tried to find a "work around" for this for several
days. I would like to be able to "block" keys in the track dialog box
(similar to a word processor) then copy the highlighted keys to where
ever I wish. If there is no way to do this then it *must* be included
in future upgrades. Please let me know if anyone knows a way around
this??!!
Thanks,
Gary
Yes, cutting and pasting entire "sets" of keys at a time would be nice. I hope
I have got my question across well. I want to EASILY be able to make a
character standup (or whatever start position), and THEN start walking,
repeating the walk sequence WITHOUT: 1) repeating the stand up keys 2)
without using a stand in object with repeated walk keys 3) telling the key
framer to repeat keys in the walk section ONLY, without copying those specific
keys and their subtrees over the entire animation. I should be able to say
repeat keys from frame YY (begining of walk) to frame XX (end of walk
sequence).
This way, I would not have to cut and paste blocks of keys like you suggest,
but would simply repeat certain sections. I realise it probably isn't
possible, but just thought I throw this out for discussion and other ideas on
how to approach the problem.

If you guys find out how, if there is a way, to cut, copy and paste selected
keyframes, please tell me. I've been doing it manually.
The closest that I have been able to copy and paste keyframes is to use the
object/tracks/file insert command. What I normally do is save a seperate
project with the motion that is to duplicated (for example a single walk
cycle). Then I repeatedly use the tracks/file insert to duplicate the walk
step (make sure relative is turned on). It is a little bit faster than copying
tracks in the track info dialog and more versatile because now you end building
motion libraries for that particular mesh which can easily be reused.

That's the best idea I've heard so far. Inserting tracks over and over like a
walk sequence beats the heck out of copying them by hand! Interesting….

Good input Peter. That make sense. Maybe in version 3.1, Autodesk will
incorporate some sort of method to easily copy keys without leaving the
keyframer???……
