Farming/Contracts/etc…

Paul,

the CIS forums specifically relating to farming out work, contract
negotiations, and building better animation companies but it never went
anywhere.. I forgot who had the extra forum space. >>
We currently have a few sections open. The section that you describe may be of
general interest to 3DS users. Do you think it makes sense to have a
"Farming/Contracts/etc" section here in ASOFT for those kinds of issues?

Jonas,
I'm really not sure. Maybe we should see how much forum interest there would be
in something along those lines. My only reservation would be that alot of
people would keep their cards so close to their chest that there might not be
alot of multi-sided discussions. Not to mention that it would be ideal to be
able to organize something along those lines that would aid the 3DS community
without having the forum overrun with people who do not currently own or ever
intend to own an Autodesk product. 🙂
What are your opinions on such a beast?

Let's open this up to the forum. The forum has a few empty sections, there's
room, but I'd like to see more in terms of what the section contents could
contain.

I like it. It would be like an on-line trade show for poeple who need help
with work and who need to get work. I would be very interested in a section
that discusses contracts, business procedures, and accepted ethical procedures.
These topics seem to be largly avoided for no good reason. I would have
nothing to lose by showing others my contracts. Besides, there are some holes
in my policies I would like to get sewn up!

It sounds good so far but I don't see alot of messages/responces here…..?

Let me add my 2 cents of thumbs up on this idea. While there are other forums
here on CI$ that deal with many of these issues, the graphics world has its own
peculiarities that could be addressed here by those with their fingers in the
paint.

Jonas,
When I first got in to 3DS about 2 years ago, I started uploading gifs to this
forum. Most of my initial contracts were from people who logged on to ASOFT
just to review the samples of 3d gifs and flcs. I am still getting work from
those clients today.
The Animationd/Images forum could just have a text file directory of Animation
and related services. Like Animation yellow pages. Each directory entry could
have a reference to sample images available on the forum.
It could also reference a text file or image file that advertises 3D services.
The sysops here could go into business themselves as 3D agents since they have
a major percentage of 3DS people hanging out here everyday 🙂

I'd rather go into business animating.. :-)… since that is what led me to 3DS
in the first place…
Hi Jonas,
I would absolutely be interested in being a part of the "new" forum section
about contracts. I think that for someone starting in the business, it would
be a great help.
Thanks,
Alex Karamanoglou
I think a "trial" run of a couple of months for such a section would be a good
idea. It would be nice to have a "job board" here, and if it works without
getting out of hand, I'm all for it.

Here, Here. I am all for it.

Well Jonas I would very much like you to open up this type of topic area in the
forum. It would be enlightening for myself, and for others too! As my current
workload has been reduced to part-time any tips on getting more work would be a
very valuable service.
Thank you, Carl

I am in favor of such a section and would read the messages. It seems like a
good idea especially in light of the telecomputing messages that have appeared
here, starting with the forensics as I recall. Comments of a lurker.
Are you aware of the CONSULT forum? Run by (I believe) the "Independent
Computer Consultants Association (ICCA?). They do have a section on contract
issues. They like it if you become a member, but they welcome lurkers.

No, I was not aware of this forum. I may check it out, but the volume of
messages right here on ASOFT keeps me from wandering to other forums too often.
I would be curious of what the folks on CONSULT would know about animation
contracting. Animation tends to contracted more like photography or art than
other computer work.
BTW, thanks for the tip. How would you feel about contract boiler plate
discussions right here on ASOFT where some of us would not need to leave "home"
to get the info?

It seems that there are quite a few notes of interest here. This is just the
type of discussion I've been scanning for for months. Who's using 3d Studio,
what are they using it for, what are they charging, who (in general, of course)
are the types of clients buying animations. I know what I'm using it for, but
I also know it's a limited, and limiting market. What about contracts, I have
an idea of what video house charge locally, but how do I fit in as a user. I
love the animation process too, I'm learning all the time, butI also am aware
that as a small company, these company, marketing and technical issues are
important. Except for a few, very experienced, or a few, quite new and
confused
users the forum has seemed to lack something. This suggestion is it. Right
square in the middle of practical hands on solutions. I like it. Where can I
sign up?
