#Hard Disk and CD-ROM

Hi,
I just got my NEC 84J to work with my Adaptec 1742A. But when I access
my CD-ROM the hard drive light, lights up. Sometimes on boot up the
computer says hard disk boot failure. I have a Gateway 2000 486/33 EISA
with a western digital 4200 Pirahna. Any help would be appreciated.

Couple of things. The EISA should interrogate your SCSI 1742A and
correctly recognize it. Are you sure all your LUN's are correct?? Check
your terminating resistors to make sure they're installed correctly and
that the drives ID are correct, i.e. 0 for a boot drive, 7 for your
adapter, say 3 for a CD-ROM.

The EISA correctly identifies the 1742A. I'm not sure how to check if my
LUN's are right. I do not know how to change the terminating resistors on
the hard drive or the NEC because they don't have any plug in terminators
(I think they have dip switches for that). My ID's are correct, I'm using
0 for the hard drive 2 for the CD-ROM and 7 for the adapter. I noticed
something else about when I access the hard drive. When I access the hard
drive the CD-ROM does'nt light up, except when I use Norton Desktop to
access the Hard drive. So I only have problems when using Norton Desktop
and sometimes on bootup the computer can't access the hard drive, but this
is rare. Thanks for any help.

Hi Daniel, Sorry for the long time which I needed for answering. There is
an utility on CompuServe with which you can scan the SCSI-Bus and through
which you can get probably the information to fix this new problem. I will
have a look today on my office PC where you can find and download it and
then I will write to you again.

The File you should download and use is WNSCSI.ZIP on Forum COREL LIB3.Try
it, perhaps you can then fix your problem. My hard disk is on a different
controller as the CD-ROM and I works okay. It is important to have the
resistors on both ends of the SCSI-Bus, but i believe you know that.
