#High Res Render lockup

What am I overlooking? I am rendering an image at 4,572 x 3600 on a P5-100, 32MB Ram, #9GXe Video card with R4c1 and Vibrant Liquid Speed drivers. The image renders at 640×480 normally. I set the display to NULL and the NO DISPLAY button was turned on in the rendering option box. When I go to render, it locks up in computer during the first step of the rendering process. I have done other images at 1296×1000 without problems using this configuration. Have I left something out, or is it a memory shortage problem? Thgansk for any insight, Rich Schwartz

Rich, when rendering a high resolution image (4,572 x 3600) with only 32mb ram you are going to build a large swap file. Make sure you have a huge amount of disk space on the swap drive. Don't rescale backgrounds during the rendering and make sure save last image is off. Swapping with large renderings and big swap files can push a disk sub-system to breaking point, so beware.

Rich, Martin is right. I do quite a lot of rendering in the range you are working. Before each render I optimize my disk and make sure I have at least 700 meg of space in the drive partition set for swapping. This, after having a few crashes myself. I now seem to be having the gods on my side because I haven't suffered a crash for some time. PS I have 64 meg of RAM in an EISA 50 and depending on how complex the image is it can take sometimes 18 to 24 hours to render.

Will, Thanks for your input. I followed Martin's advise, and was able to render all but the very highest resolutions I was asked to produce. The disk optimization sounds like a good trick. To eak out the images on my machine I went to the Optimize IPAS for optimization, and also made everyting into one object. This let me get 2940×2160, or 9.8"x7.2" @ 300 DPI for that particular geometry. Thanks again, Rich Schwartz

Rich, The high resolution stuff is a bear on space. I'm beginning to think about a huge solid state hard drive to optimize speed as well as ability to handle the sheer size. Will

Will, I've seen those units. They are appear to be very rugged and dependable, but if I remeber correctly they are quite expensive. Good luck with your choice. Rich Schwartz
