I've been using Topas 3D pro since it was first put on the shelf back in 89. I'm new to 3D Studio and although it seems quite confusing comparatively, I already see many advantages over Topas. A question: In Topas when aligning a map for precise placement I would align the polygon or obect directly over the mapping image and project it. In 3D studio, how can I see the mapped image for precise placement on the object?

There is no abilitiy in 3DS to see a bitmap without rendering it. It is a big wish list item though. A couple tips on the side for aligning maps and icons – pressing the Alt key while selecting an object will automatically scale the icon to the extents of the object (the directional Tab arrow is respected so you can constrain the height and match the width for example). Also, Bitmap Fit is a lifesaver for matching the height to width ratios of critical bitmaps.
