#Lost & Alone in 3DS

First off, I am new to this online service and do not know if this is the
section to place a
message like this.
I am looking for an individual or intrest group in the Orange County, Southern
California area
to ask questions, bounce ideas off of, and gain a basic understanding of
what it take to
use 3DS. I have so much that I want to learn and I find that there is
nobody around to
ask.
Do groups of Animators exist? Do they hang-out and talk?, or are they like
myself, (stuck to
the monitor, only getting up to go to the refrigerator).
All I am trying to do is gain some basic knowledge about the industry as a
whole. I hear
terms that I don't understand and I have nobody to turn to. It is very
frustrating! I own
atleast seven books on AutoCad and 3DS only because I can find answers
nowhere
else. Even my AutoCad instructor at a Southern California Community
College does not
know anything about 3-D modeling and has never even opened 3DS.
The world is passing me by and I can do nothing about it!

Big step on finding out more on 3DS by joining this forum. And just in
time for the Siggraph party where lots of this forum's members will
be found.
Check into the NAAUG (North American Autodesk Users Group) section
here in this forum and you should be able to hook up with a local
SoCal group.

I did find the message on Siggraph, but I don't know what it stands
for!
I also found a group in the Southern California area that meets at the
end of the month.
My final problem is that I looked in the NAAUG section, but I do not
know what I am looking at! What is a PK.Zip (or something like that) and why do
I need one. I may just have not read up to that section in my Compuserve guide,
but I am still trying to find my way around. Still in my first week on this
service.

Kevin, in addition to what Jonas has mentioned, there is a very
well-done 3DS user's group in Orange county. Give Bob Weil a call for
details: 714/548/1859. And above all else, find ANYTHING and
EVERYTHING you can about 3D and read it!

I spoke to Bob Weil over the phone and he told me where and when the
next meeting will be taking place in the Orange County area. He also gave me
some magazine titles to check out, one being C.G.W., and I was surprized to see
you name on one of the pictures. Nice Job!
To tell you the truth I find it quite overwelming to flip through these
magazines. All the finished products and modeling techniques make me look like
a child with a crayon. I feel as though I have waded into the kiddy pool only
to find that in reality it is a vast ocean.
Well, one step at a time!

One Step At A Time is a philosophy that will do you well in this industry,
Kevin.
Remember, there are no real know-it-alls in 3D, just folks on different parts
of a learning (or mutation) curve that never ends.

Richard – welcome to the fold. Other than having somebody at your shoulder to
ask, this forum is one of the best things going!
In the San Diego area, the MultiMedia Users Group meets the first Thursday of
every month (tonight) at Lightspeed, Corp., in El Cajon.
Wouldn't you know it, I walk in the door at 7:00 p.m. and find your message. If
I had found it two hours earlier I would be talking to you right now!

We also have a 3DS User's group in Northern San Diego County at Palomar
College (San Marcos) in room P32 that meets every second Tuesday night. If you
want more info I can give you the number of my graphics BBS in Oceanside, CA
(in private e-mail) where news announcements and member contacts can be made.

I was pretty new to Compuserve a year ago. Now that I discovered Asoft and
Amedia forums I download around 150 messages a week. Using messages that have
interesting info, I have begun a "notebook" of messages from forum members.
What I have found indespensible in my search and compilition of info is the use
of the off-line navigator NavCIS. Any of the off-line navigators available will
greatly increase your productivity on CIS.
The navigators allow you to download only the message headers in the forums
that you select. This usually takes only 2-5 min of online time. At your
liesure you can decide which headers are interesting (free of connect time
charges). After selecting headers simply log on a second time to download the
full messages that you have selected. All your normal CIS functions can be done
off-line MAIl, downloading, etc. I now only use WinCIM for rare occasions when
I want to chat in a forum. I personally have saved major amounts of money in
on-line charges over the last year.
Even with all my books on 3DS, it is amazing how much info flows through
this forum. I find this forum an invaluable source of info on 3DS.
In case no one explained, Siggraph is the worlds largest conference on
graphics and interactive technology with over 30,000 participants expected this
year. It is being held from Aug 6-11 at the LA Convention center. With over 200
exhibitors there should be plenty of new toys to keep us interested and
spending money.
