Hello Everyone,
Well, Summer is upon us and many of us are looking forward to the Great
Gathering of Graphics Geekheads also known as Siggraph '95 here in beautiful
(cough*cough) downtown LA, CA. As many of you know, Autodesk throws a bash for
3DS users which is always a good time. But 3 years ago a bunch of us ASOFTers
decided to have our own little thing as well, where folks who communicate each
day on the forum could get a chance to meet each other "in the flesh" and hang
out in an informal atmosphere, show some reels of our work, and generally relax
before hitting the Siggraph floor. These little ASOFT bashes have been very
succesful, with folks from all over the world showing up to meet and talk with
fellow 3DSers and assorted Adesk and Yost Group notables. I sincerely hope as
many of you can make it as possible, and that everyone has a great time.
In order for everyone to plan early, I've secured this year's site early and
will announce it here now and more times in the future.
So here's the scoop:
What: The ASOFT/SigGraph '95 party – For virtually anyone who hangs out
here, uses 3DS, or just knows someone who does!
Where: The Grand Avenue Sports Lounge in the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel –
506 Grand Avenue, LA, CA. – (213) 624/1562 – Hotel contact is David
Robinson.
When: Sunday evening, August 6th, 1995. 7:00 PM to ??
Bring: Yourself, anyone else who cares, demo reels on VHS (I hope to have a
Big-Screen set up), and a generaly fun attitude!
If there are any questions concerning this, please ask away!

Sound like great fun. I'm glad you set some thing up like this again.I was
going to try too through one here at my house, but it 45 min from L.A… I was
thinking on getting people together down for a beach party down in Huntington

Good question, Kevin. Actually, there IS a core 3DS band down here in SD
consisting of myself on guitar and vocals, Ralph Frantz on drums, and Craig
Harris on Bass — along with plenty of other folks (like JohnS) who come from
all around that have expressed an interest in jamming. Heck – I even wrote a
song called "The 3D Blues".<g>
The problem is really a logistics thing. The more I thought about it, the more
inappropriate it seemed to convolute a gathering based on voice communication
with loud music, etc. Here would be folks coming from all over to finally talk
to each other in person and relax a little, only to find it extremely difficult
with all the noise from a live band going on. A quick visualization of previous
parties confirmed my thoughts as I remembered how everyone seemed to enjoy just
hanging about and talking together.
So although a great idea, the band/jam thing just isn't really right for the
ASOFT party, eh? What I thought we needed would be another time when everyone
is together and not too much is going on. The last hour or so of the Adesk
party immediately came to mind. You know, the part where everyone is pretty
much done talking and eating and just kinda hanging around having a drink
together? So I got in touch with the Adesk folks some time ago and floated the
idea. Although they thought it was a good one, it seems that Adesk is involved
with two other major companies (I'm not gonna mention them here as it still may
be a hush-hush subject, I'm not sure) and they have some pretty big plans for
that evening, and they really didn't think they could include us. 🙁
I guess that there is an outside chance for *something* to happen that night,
but I couldn't say what, who or how.
If enough folks here write to Kathy Clinton at Adesk and tell her that they'ed
like to see a Jam like this, maybe it could be "on the bill" for next year?
I'll keep doing my best to convince them, but some support would probably go a
long way.
I hope this explains things. I really would like to play for everyone here,
Kevin, and would love to see anyone that wanted to get up and jam. Maybe next
year…

You're probably right – just thought it would be a kick to see you guys
perform. BTW, the Adesk party's at the Sony lot in Culver City – registered
users should get an invite, or can bring their hardware locks for admittance.

backround for the Adesk party.

Check that Kevin. Wait until you get an invite and PLEASE don't bring your
hardware locks! If you're a registered user, you'll receive an invite in the
mail which will allow you and one guest entrance to the party.
We are in the final stages of setting the party site – I'll post something next
week when everything is set.

Hi Alan,
I think you're handling this affair very well. I hope you can insure that the
people who manage the lounge will not automatically have recorded music
blasting throughout the room while we're there (as they always seem to want to
do.)
I would like to see an ASOFT jam session sometime. How about one in conjunction
with an ASOFT Talent Show? (Tap dancing, whistling, juggling, poetry, baton
twirling, rendering horror stories, celebrity and famous ASOFT'er imprssions,
etc.)

Thanks, Alec. The manager of the club sounded like a real agreeable sort, so
I'm sure we will have his cooperation concerning loud music, etc. As it is a
Sports Bar primarily, most of their entertainment is probably TV-oriented, and
locally controllable. Also, I'm hoping he makes good on his Big-Screen TV
offer, so we can all watch some cool demo stuff.
I just want everyone to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

It really would be confusing with demo tapes, etc.and a band. My little brain
has serial input capability and with a Beck's dongle screwed on, I'm afraid I'd
miss too much.<BG>

You're in SD? Ditto! I have obviously been missing out by going to Karaoke bars
instead of 3dS User group meetings. When/where do you people rehearse and are
you interested in additional vocals (lead or backup / harmony)? Blues / rock /
grunge / pop / C&W – I'm not picky.
Yeah, Dennis, and if you had been coming along to our SD/3DS meetings with your
associate EvanS, you'd have known all about these things months ago!<g>
We rehearse in my 8-track studio in my home in Escondido. Anyone who is
3DS-oriented and musically inclined is welcome to hang out. Regretfully, we
haven't been doing much lately as the hopes for a Siggraph venue have waned.
We've been doing mostly blues-oriented rock and fusion, but would probably
learn what-ever for whom-ever.
Give me a call if you've a mind to. Evan or Kurt have my number, I believe.

No, Ernie, I haven't heard any BBM yet, but it certainly sounds as though it

A friend had one (the coupe) in High School — wotta sleeper. Shoulda' seen the
looks of the faces in those Camaros and Corvettes when we dusted 'em…

Nah, its got a feeble 170 six cylinder. I do want to put a 289 in it though.
However, I never lose it in a parking lot. Maybe one day. I did see one with
a 289 in the Falcon Club news, but its in Pennsylvania. Do you think I could
drive it back via the InfoBahn?
