Have you used this routine much? It sounds like an ideal companion to use w/
MetaReyes and MeshPaint.
What I envision is a basic organic shape modeled w/ MeteReyes, then painted on
w/ MeshPaint using a grayscale gradient paint brush in the places where you
wanna "pull out" some further features and fine details in the mesh then using
Displace to pull on the mesh.
Do you think that this would work? (anybody else, _plez_ fell free to JI and
reply) W/o knowing my *** from a HITG (I need a copy of Gray's Anatomy around
to make sure I don't hurt myself whenever I use a shovel… <g>), this would
seem like a wonderfully _intuitive_, albeit rather expensive, way to model
organic forms of all types. This would free one from the rather cumbersome
rings of fire that native 3DS commands make you jump through.
Top off this scheme w/ BonesPro and the skies the limit!
Now lemme see… If my numbers are correct, that would be: $500 + $500 + $300
+ $500 = $1800 worth of IPAS to get an intuitive modeling and skeletal
deformation character animation subsystem installed on top of 3DS. I think it's
safe to say that 3DS ain't for the faint-hearted or the weak-kneed dabbler.

I use it occasionally and my biggest problem is my ability to paint the
correct greyscale image. It's important to start with an very high vertex
count, then use optimize when you have what you want.
I don't have Metaballs, so I don't know what would happen if the spheres were
deformed of if you tried to apply displace to the finished product.
I would suggest downloading the demo versions and experimenting a little, in
your spare time<G>.
It seems sort of expensive, but you just get the customer to pay for it<g>
Have fun
