Can someone tell me what utility is best for creating AVI files from 3DS animations and where can I find it? Thanks, Gary

several possibilites: Standard in all ways is MS VidEdit, included in VfW. Then there are Elastic Reality/Transjammer (good morpher with lots of file converters), AST Media Mania (Video-Post-software, very powerful, very useful for almost all concerns in editing Bitmap-Sequences.), VfD (is Shareware) ,Photo Morph (among many others). The Method is always the same: You render to single Frames, leave 3ds, go into on of the mentioned software, select a range of Bitmaps, and then convert it to AVI. Does anyone know about a third-party software which allows 3ds to write directly AVIs? Could economize gigs of space… Bye from Stuttgart, Germany Jan von Krogh / Imagelab

I use Adobe premiere. Not free, but does the trick. Simply load the FLIC and tell it to make the movie. Hope it helps…. Reynolds

Jan Did you receive a reply to your question about a 3rd party IPAS to create AVI from within 3ds

kind of… but i am still looking for an integrated way of -rendering- in an avi, not creating an AVI afterwards with Premiere or other softs, if you got gigas of rendered frames, this takes to long and uses double the spaces with no reason… bye from stuttgart, Jan

Jan, Perhaps you might post it in the Wishlist section. It might be a good op- tion to be able to render to AVI's as well as FLC's in 3D Studio itself. Where I work we use VidEdit by Microsoft to composite FLC's together with WAV sound files to make AVI's. It only takes a couple of minutes. We save all the files. It makes changes easier when the customer changes his minde. As this is the Autodesk Forum I should also mention that this can also be done in the new Animator Studio.

Hi, i suppose that we will see AVI support in 3DR5 quite naturally, developping R5 under NT makes AVI-access for the developpers so easy to obtain like any othe call to the OS. We are a in a different situation with the AVIs: We render in broadcast PAL, (25 fps/ 768*576 Pix/ 24 bit), resulting in getting 30 seconds of material on one 1GB hdd. If we want to apply something like a dynamic filter with one of the Windows-basing softs, we often forced to get all the frames through the ethernet, time-comsuming, disk-space-eating, machine blockin… But there is a solution right now: somewhere in the forum they we're talking about an IPAS compiling rendered frames dirctly into AVI. Will keep you informed as soon I find the message again… Bye from Stuttgart, Germany Jan / Imagelab

I can't really say. Its part of the multimedia developers package I believe. But the company had it before I came on board. Sorry.

I am using Animator Studio to do so also.

Nik, is there a player engine that will play the flc/fli files besides aawin. Have a problem with shelling to aawin from an authoring program. Size of distributing players is also a large consideration. Rick

Depending on the Authoring package, you might be able to make calls the the Animation Players .DLL directly, and not need to shell out of your program at all. Check out your documentation, and see if it supports calls to external .DLL's. -Brian
