Jim,
How does one go about making a web page of their own? I see guys doing this all
the time, and now I want a web page for me. Can you fill me in on the details?

Hi Michael,
As it turns out, I wasn't looking to have a Web Page all that soon. I was
using the Compuserve WEB browser/dialup and one of my friends told me to find
an Internet provider because it would be cheaper if I'm a regular Web surfer.
He recommended a service called DIGEX (Digital Express Group, Inc.) which gives
you 6 hours/day connect time for $35.00/month and up to 5 Megs space for web
page files.
They gave be internet account and also a shell account which allows me to log
directly on their UNIX system.
I built all my html files on my own PC at home, got it all working using
relative directory references, etc, then uploaded it to the server. They
automatically provide you with a directory to put your web page files in.
It was much easier than I thought. Actually, if you put a file there which has
the line "HELLO" in it and name it index.html, you have a web page!
My provider's tel# is 800-969-9090. There are many providers with numerous
pricings. You would want to find one that provides a number that is local to
you.
If you aren't already familiar with it, you need to learn HTML, but you don't
need to be a guru. I have figured out how to do most of my stuff simply by
looking at the source for other pages. There are a number of books on HTML. I
started out, by hacking someone elses simple Web page code
which was a hierarchical list of other web links and hotspots. Then I built on
that.
Then after you get your Web page set up, you need to find ways to announce it,
otherwise no one will find it very easily. That's what I'm doing now.
I hope this helps.

re: web page
Jim,
Thanks for the reply. That was most helpful! I'll talk to Netcom first, since
they are how I get onto the Internet, and see what they have to offer, then
I'll look around some.

Michael,
Good luck and let me know when you have your page up. I'd like to see it.
Jim
Jim,
No problem. Just keep an eye out in this forum. I'll make an announcement here
as well as several other forums. (it might be a few weeks till I get up to
speed)
Thanks again for all the info you passed to me.

Jim –
Be sure and upload some of your recent work to the ASHOWCASE Forum so we can
see it on CIS also.

This may be a basic question but I'm new to the WWW and various ftp services
(jusst never got into them). What do certain odd charaters (like ~, but I've
seen much stranger) correspond to in server paths? I see lists that include a
lot of very strange things.
The '~' usually means that what follows is a User ID on a UNIX system.
If you log onto a UNIX system you can change directory to the user's
home directory by typing cd ~userid. From my memory, it started with
Berkeley versions of UNIX.
In my case, ~jimh refers to the base UNIX directory where my index.html
file resides which is the default.

Actually, that's an alias for your home directory (an user's own home dir).
What follows isn't an user ID but instead, it would be whatever file and/or
subdirectories under your home directory (user's home dir). If I'm Bob and my
account name is bob, my physical home dir would be something like /home/bob and
a file named bob.txt in my home dir would have a full path of
/home/bob/bob.txt in which case I could also reach it anywhere on the system
using simply ~/bob.txt.
Hi Gus,
On the server that I use, ~jimh leads to two different places. If you are
logged on the shell account, ~jimh is an alias to my home directory.
If someone accesses the server via PPP ~jimh is an alias to
another place where my homepage and associated files are.

I just tried to reach your page at the address you gave here in the forum. I
use netscape. At the address you gave the server said that there was no URL
"jimh
Is the page not up and running yet?
Would like very much to see it

Hi Jeff,
Did you forget the '~' before jimh?
