#Help with PAR Compress

I am haveing a problem lately and wonder if anyone can help..
When I have my PAR drive about 1/2 to 3/4 full
and compress it I get bad frames in video files that were good.
I dont ever remember this
happening before I am now running ver 1.5.
The video was all captured with at a Q of 12 and block size of 210.
Is there any way to test my drive or the card to see whats wrong. So
far (about 4 days) DPS has had no answer..
Help.. I need to do a couple of large clips but cant figure out what to do..

Are you getting this same problem after reformating the drive and recording
your first ani file to the empty drive or only after many file deletes and
optimizes and a long time since you last reformated?
I never really tired this with only one clip What would be the point.

I usually have 30 to 40 short clips. Then I combine 20 of them into
1 Clip and want to leave blow away the 20 and leave maybe 10 clips behind..
Then I compress so I can capture and merge another 15
clips or so into the final. After this compress my remaining clips
as well as the one I made is corupt.. Not the whole clips just
individual frames in the clips.. Its makeing me goofy any ideas ??

I know everyone is going to utilize his PAR diferently. My point is that there
are ways to get the highest quality out of the PAR drive and other ways that
only result in poor quality. Many have announced here on the forum that they
use the par drive to store or archive their animations so they are ready to
play at a moments notice. This usually results in the files being constantly
fragmented, requiring constant optimization. Additionally, new work will be
using the slower tracks on the drive as well. I have found this practice
yields poor results and is more prone to file corruption than the approach I
use. I don't have an answer on how to manage 30-40 small animations on your
drive and still get the top quality. I have never had to use BLF factors below
240 or QF below 23 for renderings and QF below 15 for video capture. I think
that may change as I start using my PAR for NLE with Premier or Razor and start
having to manage the large number of files you do.

I am doing video with Razor. If your clips are any longer than
10 seconds you will probably be combineing a series of video
clips to create them.
Once I used Razor Pro for editing and create a very long clip > 2 minutes I am
running into a very big problem. Clips are becomeing corrupt..
I was told by Razor that I may have bad spots on my drive..
Maybe so all drives get bad spots eventually but why doesnt the PAR
software do something about it.. ARGHHH I need to fix this and all
I get from DPS is well call you back.. HELPPP

The situation you are describing sounds like a problem that DPS had
with there MCI drivers a few versions back. If you haven't already,
you need to download the latest drivers from IN:SYNC's BBS and they
also have the new version 1.0f of Razor Pro. The old MCI drivers did
not let you record to the PAR drive after it was about half full
(this was a problem with Windows only). I have had good luck
recording 11,000 frames and I'm doing 18,000 as I speak, I hope it
works. The most I have heard recorded to disk is about 8.5 minutes
on a Mic. 2217 drive.
I had a Mic. 2217 drive that went south recently but the symptoms
were different. It would hang after recording 10-20 frames and leave
a jumbled mess. If you think its the drive, Mic. will swap your
drive using Next Day Air for about $50.00, so you won't have that two
week wait.
I am not really doubting that its the drive I would just like
some proof before I go sending stuff to here and there.
Doesnt DPS have any diagnostics???
I sure wish I could run something and it would say its broke..
Or say too many bad block to record.. Or something..

I'm not sure if you are working with large files, but here is
another suggestion for you– There is a line in the PAR.INI file that
controls the amount of frames that you can playback, MAX_FRAMES= this
defaults to approx. 8,500 and should be increased if you have one
file that might exceed this number. Also, if you are doing large
joins in the PAR application you might want to turn off the
non-destructive join switch (from 1 to 0) this will enable you to
join two large files without making a temp file.
