#PAS16/NEC74 Problem

I have a PAS16 and a NEC CDR74. They worked fine until I sent the NEC
drive in for update for Photo CD. Now it will not find the drive. My
Driver is from Media Vision (Trantor) VER 1.46f. Is the driver the reason
that the I cannot find the drive – or could the drive be bad. I cannot
install the NEC supplied SCSI card (no slots) so I don't know how to test.
Any suggestions.
BTW I called NEC and they sent me a FedX pick up and I shipped the drive to
them to update for Photo CD. They had it back to me within a couple od
days of their time. Ten cheers for NEC. My cost $0.00.

You should be able to run the SCSITEST program supplied with the PAS CD-ROM
driver to see if the drive is being recognized. If that doesn't show the
inquiry information for the CDR-74, then you may have something as simple
as a cabling problem.
Thanks for the info and I had already tried that and there was no
connection. Finally it come to me that I had installed a Microtex
ScanMaker II scanner. I think it uses somekind of a convoluted SCSI card.
Anyway when I removed the card the CDROM connected. I then played around
with IRQ's on the scanner card (choices are none, 5 & 7 – default none) but
no matter what I used the CDROM would not connect as long as the scanner
card is installed. At this point I have left it out and will call Microtek
Monday.
Question to you. Will the Tantor driver 1.46f work with Photo CD on the
NEC drive. I understand that it is only single session which is OK for
now. Should I upgrade to another driver? If so what and where.

Don, I use 1.46f with my Sony CDU-541 with no problems reading single
session Photo CD's. I will also work with newer NEC 84 CD-ROM drives and
older ones can be updated.
NEC's phone number is in KODAK.TXT.
Rather than an IRQ conflict, you likely have an address conflict. Change
the address of one of the cards and you should be ok.
1.46f driver will support single session PhotoCD on current model NEC
drives. (CDR-74,CDR-37)
I'd like to jump in here. I bought a PAS16 and NEC CDR84J for Xmas and am
VERY interested in knowing if I can make this system read photo CDs. Who
do I contact about any necessary modifications? I haven't been able to
find any CompuServe contact for NEC. Maybe I've been looking in the wrong
places. I've tried asking folks in the Media Vision section of the
Multimedia Vendors Forum, but with little luck. They just recommended
talking to NEC. Kind of surprising that Media Vision doesn't offer info
about using the system THEY sell in their upgrade kit. Or am I just being
naive? Help from anyone would be appreciated…
Call NEC and they will take care of updating the drive at NO cost to you.
However after it is updated (if needed) it will just do single session
Photo CD. I don't thinkl there is anyway at this time to do multiple
session Photo CD.
I have not tried it yet since I got it back.

You can make the NEC 84 read single session photo CD's. You may need an
updated driver available free from Mediavision and you may need to get your
drive updated by NEC. D/L KODAK.TXT in this forum for details. The NEC 84
will not read subsiquent sessions in a multisession photo CD-ROM.
Bruce – thanks for the reply. I knew I would only be able to read single
session PCD format. But, I was dissappointed when I downloaded Kodak.txt
and found that drives with my serial number must be returned to NEC for
some kind of modification. That was NEVER mentioned in reviews that said
NEC CD-ROMS were compatible with PDC,and it sounds like a hassle. But, I'm
not sure I have much choice. As for getting drivers from Media Vision, I
have asked several times and NO ONE in the MultiMedia Vendor forum has
mentioned anything about new drivers. I think they must be dense over
there. People buy their upgrade and then fail to get a response when they
actually try to USE their product…
The driver you need can be sent to you by Media Vision tech support or
downloaded from their BBS after they verify that you bought the drivers in
the first place and issue you a password. The driver is written by Trantor
and I believe the current version is 1.46F. Media Vision can not post this
driver on CIS or as an open D/L on their BBS because of licensing
restrictions. I write reviews part time and I understand your
frustrations. The reviews are often written from spec sheets as it gets
expensive shipping all that hardware around. Sometime the spec sheets list
features that are planned, but not yet released or that they expect to
release by press time. This means drives they are currently shipping are
photo CD-ROM compatible, but all the old stock on dealer's shelves is not
upgraded. The NEC upgrade is provided at no cost and that at least is good
news. I realize it does cost you postage, labor and the loss of the drive
for two weeks, but you should be thankfull that an upgrade is available.
This route is not available for many others. I lucked out with the Sony
531, but it is not multisession compatible and no upgrade has been
announced to make it multisession compatible. BTW I DON'T write reviews
from press releases they are all hands on.
