#Conform to path?

Is it possible to conform an object to a path as it is moving along it? For
example, a snake slithering along a path?

sure. You could do this with either skin.axp or bones pro. For the bones
approach just animate a sequence of cubes which fit inside a snake following
the path. The snake should then follow the path in an appropriate slithering
manner.
With skin, you would create a snake in the shaper/lofter then slice it into
multiple sections and have them follow a path with slight time offsets (path
get lofter, path follow, object tracks copy, slide position keys for each
section by 2 or 3 frames later than previous section).
Thanks for the explanation, Martin. But I sure wish it would be possible to
just click "Conform to Path" button and make it work. I use Imagine 3.2 and it
has that function, but misses many others.

hardly anything good ever comes from a 1 button approach.
There is a follow path command, but the most optimized way of doing this would
be to write a script for multiple time offset objects. The script would be very
easy to write with the existing keyscript plug-in included with 3ds4 (pick
objects and type in the time offset for each successive object). Piece of cake.
Still it's far from your "click …. button and make it work" wish.
You have not a silicon. ;-). but you have one chance with script. I had make a
sphere, align that to a path, make follow path–go back to editor made 15
copies –go keyframer..loaded trails.script from REl.4 and it created the keys.
It looks more that a worm but if you have skin IPAS -no prolem
And if you have skin–tell me
