I have a student version of Autodesk 3d Studio, but the instructions are pretty
skimpy. I was just wondering why the program, at times, will not subtract one
object from another, but requests a change fo geometry.

The student version of 3DS is release 2 and boolean operations can be very
fussy.
Try to tesselate the objects so that each object has about the same number of
faces and avoid trying it on object with long thin faces.
Good luck

YG sent some interesting material to me on this a while back. It basically
biols down to the skinnier and longer the face being intersected, the less
likely it is to work. Sometimes the tesselations work, sometimes not.
There are others who are more fluent at describing what steps can be done to
get around this flaw, but I reccomend trying to use booleans as little as
possible until r5 comes out. Booleans in 3DS are, thus far, inhernetly
limited. It's one of the greatest weaknesses of the program.
R5 SHOULD be better, however, with as many people screaming to correct this as
there have been.
