We need to incorporate a DOS .FLC player function into an educational
program that will play a .FLC or .FLI file while playing .WAV audio.
We are ready to pay cash for the right engine that we can build into our
program.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a DOS .FLC/.FLI player that might work
for us, and who to contact?

Check out Autodesk's Multimedia Explorer. It's a windows player that can be
scripted to include .WAV and .MID (midi) files. Check out NEWPLA.ZIP on
this forum it contains the executable to run in windows or look for
AAWIN.ZIP in library 1 for the full blown version.

Do you work at Autodesk? We tried calling today (their switchboard was
down all day). We are already familiar with the DLL in AAWIN.ZIP and
planning to use it. We need an equivalent to build into our DOS engine.
If successful, Autodesk should sell a thousand or more copies of animator
with our 5000+ copies/year of the PowerCD authoring system.
Paul, yes, I do work for Autodesk. I wasn't aware that the phones were down
yesterday, What number did you try dialing?
We do not have a dos player which will also play sound at the same time. I
believe that one of the audio board manufacturers, either Media Vision or
Pro Audio have a utility that will allow sound and flc files to be played
simultaneously.

I don't need a DOS player that will play sound at the same time. My sound
comes from a separate .WAV file. Who should I call at Autodesk tomorrow
(Friday)?
Animation WOrks for Windows will play FLC and WAV files simultaneously.
ImageQ for Windows (Image North Technologies, Waterloo, Ontario) does a
great job of playing FLC and WAV files. It's inexpensive (about $249), but
don't be fooled by the price – this is one powerful package! The package
gives you tremendous control of animation playback, which is normally a
nightmare under Windows. Check it out.
Well, if it has complete interactive control, an accellerator,
self-compiling option, ability to branch to other WINAPPS and registered
path animation, then I might consider it. Otherwise, I'll stick with AWI…

Sure. We are an educational CD-ROM multimedia publisher (see PC MAGAZINE,
Feb. 26–First Looks section). We have developed a PowerCD (TM) operating
platform which allows the production of complex multimedia CD-ROMs in less
than 24 hours by automating the scripting and contents processes.
Our PowerCD platform is now being used by secondary school teachers to
produce history, science, etc. teaching applications, SAT course providers,
major magazine publishers, and many others to produce titles that will
publish under the ZCI label.
PowerCD handles text, still images, audio/visual presentations, and
interactive questions. Several title developers have requested that we
add the ability to play .FLC-type animation files (while .WAV files are
playing) that they will develop on their own. We are considering adding
this capability to the run-time DOS, Windows, VIS and MMCD versions. My
programmers tell me this is very easy in Windows (with a certain DLL that
they have located), but would like me to locate for them a DOS .FLC player
that they can incorporate into the DOS version of PowerCD.EXE.
I've been trying to locate a suitable DOS player that we can license. In
addition, many of our title developers will probably want to purchase
animation packages which we might want to re-sell to them if we can get a
discount on bulk purchases.
I am intrigued by your description of what you do. Where are you located?
Hve you heard of Screen Artists in London? They do a lot of PC-based
animated corporate presentations, and also press the occasional CD-ROM of
FLI and FLC animations. One of their guys, Phil Shatz, is on CServe. I
think he would be interested in hearing from you.

The current (newsstand issue) is Feb 9–the 2/23 issue is mailed (slowly)
on Jan 19 and arrives around Jan 26. I wish there was a better (and more
accurate way) to date all magazines. There will be when they're all
printed upon request from CD-ROMs–but this won't happen until some time in
the next century.
Question–Would you buy magazines (weekly and monthly) on disc? Which
ones?
