Steven … there was a mistake on my earlier message re: Tape Drive …
I'm still not sure about the no. of pin cos I haven't got it at the moment
… the mistake was that is was for amn A2000 rather than the mentioned
A1200 … cheers!!

Dano,
I was told that both SCSI and QIC tapes have similar 50 pin cables,
so that you can't really tell whether its SCSI just by the cable size. I
guess you may need to go to the manufacturer to be sure if it's SCSI. If
it is then you should be able to use it on the A2000 if you have a SCSI
controller that supports tape drives. Of the many controllers out there, I
only know that IVS, GVP, and Nexus support tape, although others may as
well, that I know of for sure. (Sorry grammar, isn't it?) Hope that
helps.
Steve,
Ah….SCSI is the data bus between the drive and the computer,
QIC-xx is the method and formatting of the data on the disk. They are not
mutually exculsive.
Don
But there are also drives that directly use the name of the formating
method they use, and have a propritary interface.

Dave,
True, but I've yet to see a proprietary interface named the same as
the formatting method. Not saying it doesn't exist…just I've never seen
it.
Don
how about Archive's FT-60? it's a QIC-02. they call their controller the
QIC-02 controller. and they call it QIC-02 Format. How do I know?
weeelllll…I gots one. b4 it broke, i used it on my *nix box, because
virtually ALL *nixes internally support that drive.
Tony
Tony,
Because if my memory is correct (and it's often faulty), QIC-02
required a format on the tape before use…it wasn't a streaming protocol.
Also, in the "early" days…many folks separated the unit controller from
the unit itself such as the old hard drive controllers and "stupid" drives.
Thus came the ST-506 drives, controllers, bus, etc. I presume the same
applied to the original QIC tape drives.
Nowdays, the controller is built into the unit along with an
interface adapter.
Don
I have a Wangtek drive that supposedly meets the QIC-02 and QIC-36 specs.
One is a data format spec and one is the electrical interface spec. I
don't remember which is which without going to the manuals, but at least
some of the QIC specs are electrical/connector specs.
