The main thing that I am interested in (well, not the MAIN) is making sure that the computer will not be discontinued and orphaned. I have had experience with that, I am on a PCjr right now! That's the main reason I am leaning toward the Amiga over the ST. I mean, if your computer has 3 different CIS forums all devoted to it, there are quite a few owners out there. Anyway, thanks for your help. Also, could you tell me a little about the graphics and sound of the Amiga, colors, res, MIDI, etc. Thanks again!! Jason

Someone else will pick up the video part of your question, I'm sure… As far as audio related stuff is concerned, the Amiga has four audio channels which are paired together and fed to stereo line-level RCA jacks on the back of the machine. Custom hardware allows you to load a waveform into memory and have it played back at a given pitch while the CPU goes on to something else. Frequency response begins rolling off at about 4KHZ, and is way down at 7KHz. Sampling rates typically run from 14KHz to 28KHz for instrument sounds, but can run higher or lower for other applications. If your application allows it, the 500 and 2000 allow you to switch out the anti-aliasing filter, resulting in a much wider bandwidth. There is also a simple modification which allows the 1000 to work the same way. The lower frequency limit is not DC, but it's reasonable. Many packages are available which allow you to sample sounds via mike or line input (requires a small external box), play back sampled sounds, create and play back synthetic sounds, create musical scores, and more. The ST has a MIDI interface built in; the Amiga does not. This is not terribly important, since the Amiga hardware and software DOES directly support the MIDI baud rate. The only thing one needs for MIDI is a simple converter to change the RS232 voltage signals to MIDI current loop; these can be purchased for around $50, or built for less (the circuit is very straightforward).
