You'd sing a different stanza, perhaps, if you were WRITING software, and
calling around on BBS's and finding your work posted FREE.

I'm afraid I agree with henry on this one. I can tell you without a doubt
that there are already people who write software and publish it wothout
protection, and will continue to do so. I can and do dismiss copy protected
software, and would still say that if I were publishing. I _know_ it's futile
and hurts nobody but the legitimate purchaser.

I DO write software, and have found it (indirectly) posted on pirate boards.
I still agree with Henry that CP doesn't belong on productivity software. I'm
not totally sure about games, but tend to believe that it doesn't belong there
either. (Note that the word-from-the-manual protection in Empire was not my
idea – I was against it, but my choices were to do the project as specified or
not do it at all, and I decided that at least the word-from-manual approach was
a tolerable compromise).

Copy protection doesn't stop that. Copy-protecting a $300 piece of
productivity software is a way of punishing the legitimate user, while the
thief still gets his copy (maybe 4 days later).
