Howdy! The new forum split seems to be a GOOD idea! I can't wait to try them
all!

Well, Wordperfect is the only word processor for the Amiga that does what -I-
need a word processor to do. It has its faults, but it also has no
competition.

I'am glad it does what you want, but why not own a clone? Nothing could hurt
the AMIGA more than ports of MSDOS software. If its my business I want the
real thing. However if you want more than what MSDOS gives and you can get
your work done on the AMIGA – great. I would own a MAC and be using WORD if I
was in your shoes. What will WP do that EXCELLENCE! or DesignText does not?

I own an IBM. <shudder, gasp> Wordstar is my word processor of choice on that,
although I'm looking into Sprint. As for nothing hurting the Amiga more than
ports of MS-DOS software, I don't see it. With Wordperfect Amiga I can write a
file that can be translated and manipulated in the MS-DOS world. Like it or
not, that's the world than runs most aspects of my industry. And I CERTAINLY
wouldn't use an MS-DOS port on a Mac! Word is a wonderful program if you don't
mind using three key strokes where one will do.
I'm currently looking into Excellence with Ben Blish's kind intervention. But
right now it looks like it slows way down in long documents. I write 50+ to
120+ page documents. What does WP do that DesighText doesn't? I don't know.
You tell me. Does DesignText allow complex stringing and imbedded of macros
that can also pause for user imput (text strings) before proceeding? WP does.
Easily. And despite other people having problems, I've never lost a word or
crashed a disk.
ProWrite is lots of fun, but has no macro capability whatsoever. Scribble
reminds me of a spayed Wordstar. It may be okay as a casual word processor (I
used it for awhile to cut and paste message replies into Online!), but it falls
short in too many

There are many formats for interchange of documents, ascii being the most
popular. Most if not all of the Amiga word processors will allow you to take
the resulting text out in ascii format for the reason that you can then take it
to other software or other computers that can import ascii documents. Word
Perfect has nothing special about it in this area.

I'm fully aware of importing and exporting ASCII documents. I do it all the
time. But for the most part I write lengthy, heavily formatted documents that
must be easily editable by my secretary on the other end of a long distance
telephone call. She's sitting at an IBM because that's what Universal Studios,
and most other Hollywood production companies have standardized on. She has a
choice of Wordstar, Word, or Wordperfect. Since I WANT to work on an Amiga,
rather than an IBM, I have ONE choice: Wordperfect. The file structure is
exactly the same, and requires NO additional translation for her to work on it.
This is not the only solution available to us, but it is by far the easiest.

Lee This started because I took a shot at Henry. I'am glad you like WP & think
you are a very smart person to own an AMIGA. Rule #1 in buying systems is:
find the very best for your needs, then ask what hardware it runs on. If you
like ports of MSDOS software I will give you a great deal on Rags-to-Riches
accounting or DBman. Ports hurt the AMIGA. I will support products from
companies like NEW-TEK, Gold Disk, ASDG and C-LTD. Let's get off talking about
WP & wordprocessing. If you want to debate ports fire away.

You asked me why I didn't use another Amiga word processor. I was trying to
explain. If I got carried away, sorry. I dislike direct ports as much as you
do. But as I gradually move my work from the IBM to the Amiga, I don't mind
easing the transition whenever I can. Sometimes file compatibility is
necessary. I don't want to retype hundreds of pages of scripts. I DO have a
major database to transfer once I get a 2000 and hard disk. Since I use dBase
III Plus on the IBM, I've considered DBman. Actually I like Microfiche Filer,
and am hoping their public domain import/ export module will handle it for me.
I haven't looked at it yet since I won't need it until I have the hard disk.
I'm still looking for a decent home finance package to replace Managing Your
Money. There isn't one on the Amiga. Phaser (another port) comes closest.
Ports rarely access the best features of the new machine. But they can sell
more machines to people who want to leave their old computers behind, and move
up to an Amiga.

I process words for a living, desktop publish occasionally for fun. WP also
works with most Amiga publishing programs including yours and mine, Publisher
Plus.
