Yes, I was speaking of original messages: simply a bad habit I must
break, although Larry reminded me that the Amiga keys will front-to-back me if
I'm "stupid" again. <grin>.
Am I right in assuming that the "R" flag that appears after collecting
messages only works on RTN, such that if I collect headers only, I will have to
bounce out of Whap to check them out. (I'm afraid I just can't afford to DL all
messages in topics I'm intereseted in. Historically, I've only done QS to check
for items of interest, and then done RI. Which, of course, falls apart when
people start chatting about Star Trek in the middle of a memory expansion
thread) This is the only stumbling block I have with Whap so far, and I suspect
I'm just not clear on the concept that drove its creation. Do most folks "dump"
the entire message base every few days?

The R gadget will be highlighted after a RTN is done if indeed there are
new messages. If you use QSN there currently isn't a visual indication. Click
on the M gadget to see and mark the headers.
By selecting the sections you are interested in and doing an RTN, Whap!
is much faster than manually doing a QSN then RI. You can now get all of the
messages in your selected sections. This helps you get information that you
otherwise would not have gotten because the subject had drifted. A subject
header of "Thanks for the help" may have drifted into a technical discussion of
a subject you are interested in but because the header no longer reflected the
true subject you may have bypassed it. With RTN, you will get and still save
considerably on connect time over doing what you did manually (and still not
getting that thread).

I've tried QSN and, unless you have the most narrow of interests, RTN has it
beat all hollow. It may seem tha QSN is cheaper at first look, but you have to
log on TWICE to read those you're interested in. You also might miss the
things you're looking for as the headers do not always pertain to the content.
Since a RTN takes about an average of two and a half minutes per forum at
1200 baud (unless you're hitting the _really_ busy forums 8) doing a daily run
into CIS for messages becomes quite economical with Whap!. If you have 2400
baud capabilities it makes even more sense. My sessions online (icluding
_very_ busy forums) take about ten minutes when hitting ALL my forums of
interest. Considering that 'slow' forums take about thirty seconds to do, and
the busy ones perhaps two minutes, the cost of a daily swoop-and-scoop of the
bases costs about $2.04. And that's when you get it ALL, with all subjects
set. At 2400, the price drops even more!
So, impress your friends! Become an instant expert! For the lesser part of
a half a sawbuck, you too can rampage, sack, pillage and loot the various SIGs
of CIS! Come on! Do it today! 8)

I agree with what you say in principle, Doug… but I think your figures are a
little misleading. I did a RTN of AmigaTech capturing ONLY messages in 16
(WHAP!) this morning after having cleared the board at about noon yesteokrday.
-qT it took 3 minutes. The average 'sweep' of Gamers takes about four or five
minutes.
It's STILL the most economical way of doing things (and I agree the headers
all tend to say the same thing and give little information about the
content)…but I would figure on 5 minutes or so per session. BTW that was at
2400 baud.

Good advice, Doug – even if AmigaForum SYSOPS got very picky about
subject/message titles, other forums wouldn't necessarily be guaranteed to do
so.
