#Whap & CO at 300 bps

To the Author of Whap:
You have created a very, very nice program – I will register. I would like
to ask some questions on how to set it up for best results. I normally enter
CIS at 2400 to capture messages and download, but enter at 300 to enter a
conference. Since I use Aterm 7.3 as my term program, I assume I set Aterm for
300 (for CO) and Whap for 2400 (for everything else). Then, I assume I enter
the CIS 300 node as Telephone <2> or <3>. My questions are what baud rate
should I set preferences for (300 or 2400), and how do I get Whap to bypass
Telephone <1> (the 2400 CIS node) to call on Telephone <2> or <3> (the 300
node) when I want to go in interactive mode for CO ?
My other question concerns the use of CIS menus for CO. If I enter CIS at
300 baud for CO, has Whap turned off my menus ? If so is there an easy way for
me to turn them back on at 300, at least for that session, so I can find the
forum and conference (I am not too swift at CIS command mode) ? I think
interactive mode will leave me at the first CIS page, but with no menu
guidance.
Again, this is really quite a nice program. I am impressed.

I don't know about Aterm, but Whap! does not get it's baud rate from
Preferences. It gets it from your selection on the Edit Parameters screen.
CompuServe will not allow you to switch baud rates while online. So, if
you want to CO with Whap! as the controlling program, at 300 baud, click on
Edit Parameters, deselect your entry with the 2400 baud rate, select the entry
with the 300 baud rate, click on USE, then click on INTERACTIVE TERMINAL. In
all honesty, though, if you want to come online just to CO and not to get
messages, it's a whole lot easier just to boot up Aterm directly and forget
about Whap!.
Yes, the menus are gone. You can turn them back on (for that session
only) by typing SET MODE MENU at any ! prompt.
All forums have GO 'names' or direct page addresses. For instance,
AmigaTech is GO AMIGATECH (or GO PCS 84), AmigaArts is GO AMIGAARTS (or GO PCS
85), and AmigaVendor is GO AMIGAVENDOR (or GO PCS 86). You can also get to
where you want to go by using the FIND command. Try FIND AMIGA sometime. If
you don't know the "quick reference word" for the forums you want to go into,
leave a message to the sysop, they'll be glad to tell you the quick reference
word and the direct page number.

Aterm gets its initial settings from Preferences, and then they may be changed
by having an init.key file in current or S: directory, or further changed by
loaded environment file (Fkey file), either loaded explicitly or as a result of
dialing from the phone list.
When using Aterm from Whap, it's best to have the desired baud rate set up in
preferences, as the serial.device gets a little cranky when it receives
characters that differ in rate from what it was opened as.

I was thinking of using Whap! to initiate my 300 baud CO sessions with
Aterm so that Whap! could keep track of my phone bill. I assume that if I set
up Phone <2> as the CIS 300 baud node, select the correct phone number in "Edit
Parameters", and then click on INTERACTIVE TERMINAL, that Whap! will start
marking up my online time at the 300 rate. Is this correct ? I know I would
have to sign off CIS properly and exit Aterm properly for the billing file to
remain accurate in Whap!. If this is accurate, I think I will try it so that my
billing records stay up to date.
One problem is that in "Edit Parameters", I have my connect string set for
"CONNECT 2400", since that is what my modem issues on connection to the local
CIS 2400 node. The 300 baud node connect string is just "CONNECT". Is there a
way around changing my connect string each time I want to sign on at 300 baud
for CO ?
While it might be easier to just boot with Aterm for CO, it would not be
half as much fun. In fact, Whap! makes it so much fun to use CIS that I can
already see my phone bill increasing with sparkling clarity on your graphic
charts.

You can change the connect string to just CONNECT as that would be true at
either 2400 or 300.

I have my 'Modem Connect' string configured to "CONNECT", even though my
modem responds with a CONNECT 2400, and Whap! has never had a problem with it.
Works fine – Whap! just ignores the extraneous characters, and proceeds
correctly with the Logon sequence.

I don't know if this were the right intention of the ABORT gadget but if
you have the first node number set to 1200 baud and the second at 300 baud,
after telling WHAP! to do something and go on-line after it dials try clicking
on ABORT, the program will hang a second or so and then try the next number in
line. I noticed this when I tried to call CIS and the modem was set to 1200
but the first number in the set-up was to go online at 300 baud.
Still I like WHAP! but I'd like to see it do a file-compression of some sort
cause at roughly 200 messages a day coming in here it tends to fill up the
capture disk rather quickly.

BTW, Bill, You can still have a Personal Menu and use Whap! Once you created
the personal menu, change your TOP page back to MAIN. Then you can just type GO
MENU to access your Personal Menu to go places for CO's.
