Allen, I also have a Practical Peripherals 2400 modem. The bloody thing does
not generate a DSR signal on pin 6. You'll either have to use 3 wire mode or
hot wire your cable to connect pin 6 to pin 20.
I haven't hot wired my cable yet, but will try it soon.

Hi George,
I was able to get my Practical Peripherals 2400 modem to work (with the help
of someone here on the forum who left me a message about it). Here's what I
did:
I loaded up Access! (any term will work) and typed AT&F. This will load in
the factory default settings for the modem. Then, I typed AT&D2. It seems that
the PP2400 needs the DTR to be set up this way (disconnects and disables auto
answer if it detects an "on to off" transition on DTR). Once that was done, I
typed AT&W to Write Be settings to memory.
That seemed to <QCe trick and have been able to get Whap! to talk with my
PP2400 with no problems since.

Oops, Sorry George, forgot to mention that the PP2400 does generate a DSR
signal on pin 6 (at least the manual says it does). The Default condition (&S0
I believe) should do the trick for you if you have everything else (except DTR)
set to the factory defaults.

Ok, Allen, I missed that AT&S command in the modem docs.
I have to admit that I've read better hardware docs than Practical
Periphials' in my life.

That's for sure (read better hardware docs than the PP2400)! Mine is a
little 4-5" by 7" wonder of stapled sheets.
You know, some of these companies (hardware and software) really should
consider having some of their beta sites submit docs. Maybe we'd get more
useful and usable info that way, eh?
