#Parallel port CDROM

Are there any CDROMs with parallel port interfaces? If so, is the is the
data transfer rate sufficient? Thanks, BN
There are parallel to SCSI interfaces available from Trantor Systems. You
can hook up almost anything SCSI and not have too many problems. Trantor
has quite a few drivers available for the different devices. For most
purposes the parallel port is fine for CD-ROM use.
Thanks, Albert. I recall the co. name now that you mention it. They do
advertise a bit. The only remaining question is whether I can use any
drive or must I use one provided by Trantor. If it is simply an interface
that looks transparent to the drive, then great. Thanks again. Bob N.
I'm quite sure Trantor doesn't make any drives themselves they just make
SCSI cards and drivers for almost everything. If you want the specifics
you can leave a message to Trantor Systems directly since they frequent
this forum quite often.

Always Technology also makes a parallel to SCSI adapter, the AL-1000. I'm
in engineering, so I'm not sure the pricing. For more info, you can call

CompUSA carries a SyDOS parallel port CD ROM with an advertised access
speed of about 850ms. A sales rep told me today that they got a flyer
from someone saying they had re-tested the access speed at about 500ms.
Other reps have told me it is rather slow. I've not been able to play
with a demo unit. It sells for $329. The package the drive comes in
says
that a "full motion video" update will be available for the drive soon.
I'm really not sure what that means.
