Larry – I am calling via the Swiss packet switched network TELEPAC. I dial the
PTT-PAD (packet assembler-disassembler) with an ordinary Modem (1200,1200,
8N1), where I identify myself with a NUI (Network User Identification), so I
won't miss any bills. For Compuserve there is then a short number, 03132 to
dial. Since the PTT have lowered their tariffs substantially about a year ago,
this way of linking up is "affordable" (?). Recently it was announced that
Compuserve is going to form a joint venture with Telecolumbus in Switzerland
with the intention of building up a European "Compuserve". I read it too in the
local press. Let's see how that will be coming along. – Alfred

I hope that comes in soon, and is worthwhile. That's what I was asking you
for, but didn't know if it had been announced yet.

Larry – Well – I have the chips, but the vendor/expert doesn't talk to me
anymore… Unfortunately I still seem to have a problem. The chips are set in
their sockets and I changed the jumpers to sit in positions 2 and 5 (from left
to right, looking at the card as if it would stand in its socket). The machine
will autoboot and starts working on the startup-sequence, but fails towards the
end, probably with or close to the "binddrivers" command. The message is:
Software error – task held, Finish ALL disk activity. Select cancel to
reset/debug. Choosing cancel will produce the Guru: # 00000004.00C0BDB8. The
Phenomenon is exactly reproducible with a new start (how nice). – Alfred

As I mentioned before, I was never able to get the extra memory working at
all. There were a lot who did get it working, but some who couldn't, in spite
of the best efforts of a lot of people trying to help. My solution was to take
_ALL_ the chips off the board and put them on a Micron 2 meg board. Thet
expansion board for the 86 pin slot was the second worst kludge I have ever
seen in a commercial product.
I'm afraid I no longer have the board, so I can't help you further.

Thank you Larry. I have also been offered an upgrade to a B-Board. A way to go
may therefore be B-Board plus some expansion board. – Alfred
Alfred,
I think that's probably the best way to go, though certainly more expensive
than some of the alternatives. It will bring you all the advantages of the B
board, and you will know that anything you get for it will be designed to work
with it. Good luck.
