Could anybody tell me the meaning of the letters MNP when talking about modem!? What is that for?? Pat.

Pat, MNP = MICROCOM NETWORKING PROTOCAL It is a linking system between like modems, with several classes of operation. I have a MICOM 2400 which uses class 3 & 4, that do error correction. Other modems with class 5 will do data compression. –Claude

G'day Claude,I thought that MNP level 4 does data compression as well as error correction…I hope so!! Don't suppose you have the number of a CI$ local node that supports MNP??,as i'd like to try out my new Netcomm M5 modem out( I guess the nodes that support MNP do up to level 5?? Brendan, Level 4 streamlines the protocol header to provide better performance over level 3. Level 5 and up are the start of data compression. -Jack-

Hi Brenden, The latest issue of ONLINE Today from CI$ has a review of a modem for the I*M systems, made by ATI. In the review it is stated that MNP class 1-4 is error detection and correction, and that class 5 is compression. The article also says that CI$ MNP lines support up to class 4. 🙁 I call a CI$ node in Lombard, Il., USA, which is probabily just a little too much of a long distance call for you. :-). Check in the PHONES section to see if there is an MNP node near you. –Claude

Pat, Micocom Network Protocol It's a methodology of error correcting protocols handled at the modem level, rather than at software level. If all modems used MNP protocols, there would be no need for file transfer protocols such as XModem, CIS B and so forth. At the higher levels of the protocol, not only will it correct errors, but it will also compress the data so you get a higher effective transfer rate…that is, at 2400 baud, you can transfer files as if you were connected at 4800 baud. Pat, You can find that information by typing GO PHONES at any CIS ! prompt and looking for the nodes in your city. If it's a CIS node, it'll have a letter M after the network abreviation (in this case CS). However, I already did that for you, the Montreal 2400 baud number is MNP compatible…the 1200 baud number isn't. However, be aware that CIS doesn't support binary dumps, so you won't be able to do a direct dump of a file and depend on the MNP protocol to correct errors…you'll still have to use a protocol transfer. (Well, I shouldn't say it doesn't support binary dumps, but it can be done, but it doesn't properly terminate the file for the Amiga so the dump is worthless). Don

Don, MNP only provides for link error correction, you still need a layer above that for the serial-to-modem connection too. -Jack-

Pat, MNP stands for Microcom Networking Protocol. It boosts throughput by reformating the data between modems and provides error correction. A level 4 MNP modem connection can achieve 20% increases. A level 5 connection provides data compression on the fly, but is only effective for text, not binary data. 30-50% performance gains are usual for level 5 MNP. -Jack-

I forget what the letters stand for, but it means the modem has a built in error correction algorithm. The most common right now are MNP 4 and MNP 5. It also lets the modem use more tones over the phone lines, and doesn't use the frequencies that don't work. HOWEVER, if you have a modem with MNP and your online to a regular modem, your modem will default to normal mode. If you are set up so that both modems have MNP, the data transfer will be much faster and much less prone to error. I saw some software advertised for an IBM which would give any modem MNP, I was skeptical though.
