I just got A-MAX. This is great! Most of the software I tried is working,
and , in fact I'm calling via A-MAX and FREETERM! Also Navigator TM is
workinggreat. And here is my question, Is there a hard drive option for A-MAX?
Or is there a plan to do so? Mac w/out hard drive is little too ……..

Readysoft claims that there will be a new release of A-MAX in the winter
which may support harddrives, but nothing yet. Its been talked about for a
while and it is quite possible it'll be ready by then.

Oh, That's a great news! But until then I must suffer from single drive
operation of MAC….. sigh. For future version, I realley like to see the
sound ability, too. or is it too much?? Junichi!
I think that sound is hopeless. I remember reading that the differences
were so great that it couldn't be converted from Mac to Amiga in real time. Why
do you only have one drive? The first thing you should have bought was a Mac
(apple or compatible) drive so as to give you two drives : the mac and the
internal Amiga drive. If you have a df1: or 2:, then you have a third drive.
That's my setup: one mac drive to read mac disks and 2 amiga drives for the
disks I use all the time, such as the system.

Well, I do have the external MAC drive. But…. I'd really really like to have
the harddrive….
About the sound, All I like to hear is Pooooon sound when it boots itself.
I like that sound…. Well, I think it is too much to ask…

We play both Amiga and Mac digitized sound files on the CoCo… one is offset
by 128 (I forget which – amiga?), so it should be hard at all to use Mac sounds
on the Amiga, seems to me. – Kev
I heard someone talking about the HD driver for AMAX. I was wondering if its
out yet.

Out of curiosity, why didn't you just by a Mac? A used Plus with a hard drive
can be found in many places for $1500-2000. Although more expensive than
A-Max, ROMs, and drive, still it's the real thing.

Perhaps, but at least it is 100% compatible and supports a hard drive. Out of
curiosity have you benchmarked anything to determine whether the A-Max runs at
full Amiga speed? Does it suffer any slowdown for software translation or the
like? I really haven't much interest in one for personal use because I already
have two Macs, but I am sort of curious about the implementation.

I have A-Max, and am running with an A2620 68020/68882 board. It runs
slightly faster than a Mac+.

Thanks, Tim. I presume, then, that the system translations from Mac to Amiga
must have been more a hardware problem than software since there is no obvious
slowdown. What actual incompatibilities are there between the emulator and the
actual Mac, besides copy protected programs and such?

It is basically a software emulation. Both systems use the 68xxx. The Mac
roms get loaded into ram then the Amax software crunches on it to make it run
with the Amiga configuration.
What degree of funtionality does it provide, Steve? What isn't compatible with
the A-Max? I have a Mac Plus here and a Mac SE at my office. Would I have
much use for it on my Amiga? Can I run concurrently with an Amiga process? If
I wanted to import or export data to and from an Amiga application, can that be
done other than by copying data to a Mac disk, then importing into a Mac
application?

Amax takes over the Amiga. If you have a Mac you have no need for Amax.

You could probably transfer data via the serial port. As Steve says, you may
not have much use for it with the Macs around. On the other hand, you might
want that extra speed. 🙂

Steve The A-Max manual says that any copy protected software that makes direct
calls to the Mac hardware, bypassing the operating system, probably won't work.
Also, programs that support special Mac add-on hardware will have a problem.
The mainstream business/paint/applications work the best; Excel & Word,
PageMaker, HyperCard, MacTerminal, etc.

I've used a MAC program called "Speedometer", and with my Ronin 68020
(with 32 bit ram), get speeds just under that of a MAC II. Yours should too.
That is more than "slightly faster than an Mac +".

actually, I believe the amiga ought to run a tad faster than its preppier
cousin. faster 68000, some hardware graphics versus all software graphics, and
same everything else.
