Has anyone had any experiences with either the Konica 10 meg floppy drive or
the Syquest SQ-555 cartridge drive? If so, could you relate your experience to
me? Also, where did you purchase the products and what prices did you pay?

I don't have either of those sysyems on my A2000, but the Supra 10-meg
floppy on my ST uses the Konica mechanism. I use it to do backups. I've had it
for several months, now, and no problems yet. It's not as fast as a HD (it runs
about 80ms access time) but is much faster than a floppy. The cost for the
drive that plugs into the back of the ST (case, PS, all cards and one 10-meg
floppy) was $849 mail order. The disks (at least as of a few months ago) can be
had for $25-$27 each in quantity (I think it was 10 disks).

Harry, thanks. Yes it does help a lot. I found one source for the bare drive,
Abel Supply, at around $500 (they say the price may be slightly lower because
they think Konica has dropped the price) and the diskettes at $20 for 10. I
think I may go ahead and order it for my system. I really need something like
that for backup.

Was that really $20 for 10 or $20 each, in quantities of 10?

The quote was $20 for 10 diskettes, Larry. Actually $19.67, I believe. That
was given to me by Abel Supply. Normally they sell for $25.00 per box. That
was how I understood the quote. Maybe they meant each, but that wasn't how it
came out!

Well, I placed my order and the confirmation appears to support the original
quotation of $19.47. But I guess if it shows up with a bill for $194.70, we'll
know for sure!!!!!

Thanks for the info. Is the drive a SCSI? ST506? or ??

Larry, I think it's ST506 and doesn't come with a controller, but I may be
wrong. I know that it is compatible with my Cltd interface and presume that it
either runs on the SCSI buss directly or would simply run as the second device
on my Adaptec controller. Will let the world know when I do!

Thanks for the info. That price for the 10 megs has me curious – to go
from $27 each to $20/box of 10 in just about a year just doesn't seem right,
somehow. Are you sure they didn't mean the 1.2 meg HD 5.25" that the ATs use?
That would make a little more sense at that price. Well, like you said, we'll
find out soon enough.
BTW, the specs for my drive said that it could read (but not write) PC 1.2
meg disks. Could be Abel got a little confused somewhere … Let me know what

Well, Harry, I don't know what to tell you at this point. I placed an order
for the drive and a box of disks. The drive was $495 and the disks were $19.47
unless that is per disk. However, I would be surprised that they would be $27
each because presumably the technology permits that density on pretty ordinary
diskettes. But when it all shows up on the doorstep, I'll know the facts and
let you know! OK?
