Betty: I think you just answered some of my questions to Ethan. FFS on floppies?! Really? I hadn't heard about that. How much faster will it be? Faster than runni{ing BAD on them? –Jim

Jim, I don't know how much faster, but it will be very noticeable, I am told. Faster directories, too, I believe. And Workbench will multitask – no more busy pointers. LOTS of goodies. Betty

Finally we get rid of that busy pointer! I can't wait! –Jim

There is JazzBench if you don't want to wait for the workbench to finish something before going on to the next, but be prepared for bugs and gurus. — Ethan

JazzBench JazzBench! WHERE IS IT? Everyone's talking about it! Marc!

Marc, AmigaTech, Lib1 for JAZZBENCH. I know the name had to be shortened to 6 characters, but I don't know just how it got shortened. Sorry. Betty

Don't bother with jazz, it is not ready for general use. Ron

There is a program in the libraries which gives FFS on floppies now. It seems to work quite well. — Ethan

Ethan, Where and what's it called? …Dave
#58860From: Ethan SolomitaJul 25, 1989 9:08 PM
Its called floppy.zoo. I probably got it from sec. 1, but its probably now in 13 or 14. — Ethan

Ethan, Great, thanks, I'll check it out. …Dave

But Ethan, it is not really supported, and it is not much faster. Nowhere near the speedup, etc., that will come with 1.4 when FFS for floppies is supported in the ROM. Betty

Although it isn't supported, it is possible to copy files from OFS disk to FFS. The improvement may not be tremendous, but I understand that disk directories, the most annoying aspect of the disks, will gain most. — Ethan

Right. But you have to do a DiskChange when you swap disks. Or you use the program which does it automatically, but when you have no RAM to spare.. Marc!

AutoDiskChange is only 3K! How memory conscious can you be! — Ethan
#59134From: Marc DionneJul 27, 1989 5:18 PM
Wellll, I cannot boot from a FFS floppy.. and since it is not yet supported without starting a program here and there I'd rather wait for 1.4. Even though it IS tempting.. Marc!

The exact process for the FFS floppies is this: (note I already have the FastFileSystem.device as I have a harddrive. If you don't have it you just place it in the devs: directory). I type mount ff0: and mount ff1:, just as you would mount rad: or vd0:. I needed to make entries in the mountlist which I copied from the given mountlist. After that just 'run autodiskchange'. Now as I have a hard drive, I don't use floppies that often and it isn't more than just a curiosity. But for the unfortuante masses with out a harddrive 8), its probably worth a look. — Ethan

I knew all that already.. yeah, if I had your setup, of course I'd use them. One thing that'll be nice with FFS in ROM will be booting from a FFS RAD: Marc!

Just as a general note on DOS 1.4. With what they'd done for DEVCON even OFS floppies were noticeably faster. // \X/ Lynn
