#D Paint
9 messages in this thread
Recently I have been learning how to use DPaint II; I have a copy of the
IBM version at home and use the Amiga version at the Cable company. I would
like to transfer some of the work I have done on the version at home to the
one at the Cable company. Am I SOL or is there a conversion program?
Suzanne:
I'm not familiar with the format on the IBM, do they use IFF or
TIFF? If they use IFF, then something like DOS to DOS is what you need. If
they use TIFF, then in addition you'd need something to convert from TIFF
to IFF and vice versa. I know that there are TIFF to GIF and GIF to IFF
converters, I don't know if there are ones that do the whole job. Check
over in the libs in AmigaArts, somewhere there is a library with graphics
utilities. (I'm not familiar with the lib names and numbers in Arts)

Clint, the PC version also uses IFF (as well as TIFF). –Eet–

Jim You mentioned that the PC Version also uses IFF—The PC version of
what? Were you still talking about DOs to DOS or some other utility? Reply
appreciated. Suz
Suzanne:
The PC version of DPaint produces IFF files. You need DOS to DOS
or some other conversion utility to make IBMPC files readable on the Amiga
and vice-versa. Since TIFF is the supposed IBM standard image format, I
was concerned that you would have the additional step of IFF to TIFF
conversion, but apparently you don't have to worry about that. There is a
utility here in one of the libraries that will do the conversion between
IBMPC disk format and Amiga disk format. I don't know which library it is
in, or what it is called, but hopefully someone who is reading this will
enlighten us.

Try MSDOS.LZH in Lib 14. It will allow you to use one of your 3 1/2 drives
as a 720K IBM floppy.

Thanks. I use DOS 2 DOS myself, but I was sure there was a PD or
shareware utility somewhere, I just didn't know what it was called.

TIFF is not an IBM image standard.. there is none. TIFF is as popular (or
more) for DTP and thus Macs.
I don't know about earlier versions, but DeluxePaint II Enhanced for the
IBM PC will read IFF files (up to 8 bitplanes for 256 color mode) and will
also read .PCX files (a format invented by ZSoft for PC Paintbrush, and
used by several other MS/DOS programs). Additionally, EA created a new
LMB format which is not compatible with Amiga .IFF formats and which
optionally includes a shrunk version of the picture for visual browsing.
You can move 4 or 5 bitplane artwork back and forth from the PC to an
Amiga (but you must save your files on the PC in "old" mode in the save
file requestor). Additionally, ASDG's TAD (The Art Department) can convert
new style .LBM files from the PC and 8 bitplane images into regular .IFF
files or even HAM .IFF files. The loader for the new style .LBM format is
an optional extra, but TAD is simply AMAZING, so I recommend it. If you
are careful to save yoour IBM art as "old", you won't need the optional
module for TAD.
