#640 kB on 2088 card?

Is there a way to easily upgrade the memory of a 2088 bridgeboard IBM-PC
from 512 kB to 640 kB? I see two banks of 256-kB-chips on the board. Is it
possible to replace one with 512-kB-chips? Or is there a solution with an
external memory extension board? — ChrisW
You must use an extra board (multi purpose suggested) to get more ram.

Chris,
Expansion with a memory board is the only way to expand the BB's
memory. I'd suggest a multi-function board since there's limited slots
available for PC boards.

The problem with this solution is that it's almost impossible to find an
XT-compatible multi-function board. All of the dealers I went to said they
hadn't sold such a beast in years; they're loaded with the AT-type boards,
however. I finally gave up and bought a memory only card, which is NOT
hard to find. I wish Commodore had spent a few more bucks and made the XT
slots AT compatible!

Don,
Humm…an XT with AT slots doesn't make much sense…since XT's
can't access the AT extensions. XT's don't have the necessary bandwidth in
the CPU to do anything with the extension signals.
While it's true that IBM no longer makes the XT, and clones have
had the serial/parallel/clock-calendar built in for quite a while now (thus
eliminating the need for XT multi-function cards), you should still be able
to find then fairly easily. If nothing else, at a second-hand computer
store.
