Hard Drive Question

As a new (and naive) user of a Hard drive I've got a question here…
Is ok to leave your Hard drive spinning all the time? I generally leave my
computer powered up at all times except when it is exceptionally hot or
during storms. Is it benificial, detrimential, or niether to have a hard
drive powered up at all times?
It's a 105m Quantum LPS, I'm using the XETEC fastrac with it.

It's beneficial to the HD to leave it on all the time…presuming
it doesn't get hot (warm is ok). The most strain on the drive is during
startup.

I've heard many different philosophical sounding answers as to which is
better; continuously on or turn on as required. My philosophy is to leave
it on if you can afford the power draw since, in my experience with Navy
equipment, it's the power transitions (turning power on or off) that
usually kill the components in most electronics.
Again, that's my observation.

I'm _firmly_ in your camp. I leave ALL my machines running all the time
ESPECIALLY those with HDs.

That particular combination of hard drive and controller should NEVER be
turned on at all……….it should be mailed directly to my house via air
mail (GRIN). Boy, do I envy you.

I let my Computer on 24 hrs/day. Unless of course, it storms or
something. I remember seeing something a long time ago on USENET on the
same subject. Opinions were split 50/50:-).
