Any info on digital mixers? I hear they are available, and I'd like to set
up myself with a digital portastudio of some kind… (I want to mix
midi-produced music with analog sounds – vocals, guitar…)

You might want to consider the Tascam 688 MidiStudio. It's an 8-track
cassette with built in mixer, "smart" FSK tape sync, MIDI ports, MIDI
automation of channel routing, inputs, and muting, plus more. I just got
it, and I'll be uploading my impressions of it shortly.
Watch for it.

I do not know of any mixers that convert a/d and process in the digital
domain; if they are out there I would guess you could buy a nice house for
half the price! However, I do know there is soon to be released an
"affordable" 8-track DAT recorder, which when coupled with a clean mixer
and synthesizer will produce amazing sound quality! If all you want to do
is mix a. signals with d. signals then you can buy a synch which will allow
you to multitrack your a. signals and "mix" in an original generation synth
output for the utmost in quietness!
The Yahama DMP-7 and DMP-11 input analog line level signals and process in
the digital domain. They are quite pricey, although not quite as expensive
as your guess. The DMP-7 has motorized faders that can be remotely
controlled via MIDI. The DMP-11 is a rack-mount version w/o the motorized
faders. It's been a while since I looked at them, but I think that
they're in the $2-5K range.
