Any recommendation for CD-ROM player? I'd like to purchase an inexpensive
one to use my Adobe Type-On-Call that came bundled with SuperATM.
Or, is Apple's CD-300 so great that I should wait another month or so for
it?

Download the files CDFAQ.TXT and CDROMF.ZIP. Both give good background
material and drive specs to help make your CD-ROM purchase easier.

If I was presently in line to buy a new CD-ROM I'd hold off for the new
Apple offering. Price consideration would not be my motive, but if that is
a biggie with you the Apple unit remains something to wait for from what
I've been hearing.
Sources flatly state that on the latest (January 6, I believe) Apple
official price the CD-300 external remains at it's original price, $599
(the internal remains at its $499 list). There have been reports that Apple
would move the *list* price up to $729 (a $130 increase), but so far
sources say a price change has not happened.
Another controversy concerns just what is or will be included with the
external CD-300's base package. Will it include the 9 discs as some
insiders claim? Will it come with nothing–not even a cable, as others seem
to think? Who knows??
Early reports had the CD-300's release date somewhere in November, then
December, then January, then February, etcetera. Who knows for certain??

Just thought I would add my two cents… I just read a news release in the
March issue of MacWorld about PhotoCD compatible CD-ROM drives that said
"the Toshiba XM-3401, a double speed drive, boasts an access time of 200ms,
which is faster than Apple's double speed 300CD drive". I would say that's
a heck of a lot faster than Apple's drive. Particularly since you can't
get the CD300 anywhere.
May be we should come up with a new acronym for Apple's drive "AMOBYTBS"
(announced months ago, but yet to be sold). Since I am almost out of
patience waiting for Apple and I need a PhotoCD compatible drive right now,
Apple will probably lose a sale on this one.

I believe the Texel 5024 is a good compromise….265 ms access time,
upgradeable to multisession for $20. I am very happy with it.
