I've been using my 3000 for about 3 weeks now and have just recently
noticed something strange. I have the 105meg Quantum installed and while
using the computer, every so often I can hear the drive being accessed. It
sounds just like capturing text online, ala JRComm. I havn't noticed
anything different in my files and don't have anything running in the
background, that I know of. Is this normal? Am I hearing things?:-^…..

I've got a 105 Quantum LPS and I was wondering the same thing. Every now
and then it makes that little 'tick-tick' sound like it's writing or
reading something. This happens even when the monitor is turned off and
I'm not using the computer–just have a plain workbench screen up. I don't
think it's bad since that seems to be what you're describing, but i would
like to know what it's doing.

It's my understanding that the Quantum's do a quickie self-check
every so often. If so…that's probably what you're hearing.

Thanks for putting me a little more at ease. My Syquest used to do that
when it was hooked up to the 500 but it was actually just preparing itself
to crash:-). Now that I have the 3000, no problems.

I've heard that the drives periodically recalibrate their servo amps. Every
SCSI drive I've ever seen makes those little bloop noises.

my quantum 40 always has, too (at least i can hear it) but my Seagate 2383N
never does (and it is louder so I should be able to hear it) – also can't
hear my Rodime 3057S do it, either but that drive is very VERY quiet.
never bothered me or concerned me when I heard the Quantum do it, just
figured it was auto parking or something – obviously no harm done as it has
done it's little automatic dance for almost two years. the access light
doesn't come on, I can just hear the little jig as it dances with itself
from time to time.

Looks like we got some replies so I'll check `em out. I is a bit
disconcerting after having trouble with my old system.

I talked to a few other people today, (Not HD experts), but they seem to
all have their HD's chirping every now and then as well. So I doubt if
it's detrimental to the system.

Quantum had a problem with their original ProDrive 40S (and possibly,
other models) that involved their head positioners getting stuck; the
firmware on the drive was changed so that the drive would do a "kneebend"
periodically to avoid this from happening – it sounds like the drive being
accessed. My friend's does this all them time, since GVP sent him the new
firmware when his drive crapped. It could be something like this, although
if the 105meg is an LPS drive (new design), I'm not sure.

Yes, I do have the new 105 lps drive. Your explaination sounds good to
me though;-).
