#Obj. parts won't render

I am posting this out of sheer befuddlement, so bear with me, please. Some time time ago, I obtained a robot-cop object made by Mike Halvorsen. It is a fairly large object (about 300K, I think). When I try to render it, it seems that only the torso and part of the head are visible. Everything else has turned invisible! No arms, no legs, no visor nothing! I have tried rendering in both trace and scan-line modes, all with the same results. I have also changed the world size to 8000,8000,8000 to no avail. My question: has anyone encountered this problem before? What can be done to solve it? Thanx in advance, Trin—-Winnipeg, Manitoba—– – via Whap!

How much RAM do you have in your system? I have encountered that problem with one HUGE scene and, after a lot of trial and error I have come to the conclusion that it is a memory issue. Of course, I am a bit prejudiced, since that conclusion provides the perfect excuse to upgrade my system from 8 to 16 meg of fast ram…:-). -Brian

Brian, I have a 3 Mb A500, of which 512 K is chip-ram. I too think that this is a memory related problem but I really have no way of making that determination. One thing to note is that I took the group of objects which made up the left arm and joined them together. I saved this object and then rendered it. No problems here. Next I added the whole robot cop grouping and rendered the scene. The result: the left arm object rendered but the robot-cop grouping rendered as before with no arms, legs, visors, etc (does this make sense???). Also, I tried to JOIN the robot-cop grouping into one object and what I got was a whole mass of lines and points. There's definitely something weird goin on here that's for sure. Anyways, I believe that the limiting factor is the amount of chip-ram that is available, as someone else who has a 3-Mb amiga said that he had no problems rendering the robot-cop grouping (although he didn't say whether or not he had 1 Mb of Chip-ram). Oh well, I guess I'll just have to take the plunge and upgrade my fat agnus. I don't think warranty should be a hassle now that my warranty has long expired. -Trin comin' at ya from WHAP! – via Whap!

Sorry it took me so long to reply to your message, Trin, but I wasn't logging on to CIS as often as usual this week. I don't think the problem is chip ram — I'm pretty sure it's fast ram. The program has no problem showing the final image, which I think would happen if chip ram was the issue. Instead, it simply doesn't render certain objects. In my experiment I created a large scene – a skating rink, actually – and gradually added skaters, tables around the rink, spectators, etc. The entire area always rendered, but after adding a certain number of objects adding any more would not only result in the new object(s) not rendering, but would cause parts of older objects to not render. That was what led me to conclude that it is a fast ram problem. Of course, upgrading your agnus would probably be a good idea anyway. Let me know how you do, since I am very curious about this problem. (I really want to create that full skating rink image as I originally planned it.)

Brian, You are probably correct about it being a fast-ram problem. I tried to render the object on a 3 Mb A2000 with 1 Mb Chip-ram and I recieved exactly the same results. But seeing as another fellow with 3 Mb of RAM was able to render it I would expect the object to behave similarily on my system. Perhaps the program doesn't like my set-up or something, I don't know. I've put it on a lower priority for now so I can try other projects and learn more about IMAGINE. (I wouldn't mind uploading the object if there was enough interest). Well, if anything new develops here I'll post. BTW, that skating rink idea sounds interesting, what sort of objects are you including? Cya, Trin, via WHAP! – via Whap!
