I'm going crazy waiting for AmigaDos 2.0. I know that the A3000
ships with it, but I would like to retro-fit my A2000. Does anyone know
when 2.0 will be available on in ROM? Even a disk version would get me
through, but as far as I know, that's not available either.
I've been told that the reason 2.0 is not available is that there
are compatibility problems. If this is the case, why is Commodore shipping
the A3000 with it? Or am I mistaken on that note?
I've seen 2.0-compatible software, so someone has to have it,
unless developers are using Beta copies. Is this the case? I'm interested
in developing 2.0 applications. Is it possible for me to get a Beta copy?

2.0 has not yet been released to the public, except for the 3000. The
reason for this is that is has not been ready to burn into ROMS (until
recently). CBM did not want to burn the ROMs prematurely, as that would
have caused more problems than it was worth. The 3000 was an exception
because the new hardware design really needed some features that were not
in 1.3. Also, since the 3000 has a built-in MMU, it was an easy
(relatively) job for CBM to support a disk-based image of the Kickstart.
Also, I believe that CBM thought that 2.0 would have been ready a lot
earlier (like when the 3000 was scheduled to ship). They missed that one

Preliminary beta copies have been available to registered developers.
There are (and have been) risks involved with running the beta versions,
and the developers have been made aware of the potential dangers and of
various precautions one should take. You can contact Commodore about
becoming a registered developer – the cost is reasonable ($75 per year).
Or you can just be "just a little bit more patient", as all signs
indicate that 2.0 should be apparing "very very real soon now", although
nothing "official" has been announced by Commodore.

You wouldn't by chance have the address/person to write to for becoming a
developer, would you? I've been wanting to get into Amiga Development for
some time now, but just have never gotten serious about it. Spending some
money to register as a developer would light a fire under my butt to get me
back to work <grin>!!

I'd like to develop an CIM-type interface for the Amiga using the HMI
protocol. Unfortunately, there is no HMI toolbox for the Amiga so I have to
develop that from scratch <sigh>. Then I have to show the folks here that
"Hey…I did CIM for the Amiga! Can I release it as ShareWare?"
I don't know how long the process will take, but it's going to be a good
learning exercise if nothing else <grin>!! I'm also interested in
developing some MIDI software, first of which will be a sample player that
can sit and multitask so sequencers can access it just like it would a
keyboard/rack module.
So much to do…and SO little time!!

Although I (and I'm certain many others) would welcome an HMI product for
the Amiga, I've _heard_ (and I stress _heard_) that CIS has been insistant
in the past about requiring that any HMI software using only their supplied
library functions. Since there's no CIS supplied Amiga HMI library, nobody
has been able to develop any HMI software. You might consider checking
with them beforehand, to save yourself a lot of work. (Personally, I'd
really like to see such a product.)

Yeah…I know about the policy as I work for CS. I'm hoping to develop the
HMI library, application, and then go to someone and say "Here you are! Go
ahead and put the toolbox in the Developer's Forum!!" I really don't think
developing the micro toolbox is going to be that big of a deal.
Unfortunately, the Amiga is not a targeted development platform. But that
doesn't mean I can't try to do some development in my spare time <grin>!!
It does mean that anything I develop can benefit the Amiga comm community,
since a toolbox will then be available.
Anyway, that's the story where HMI is concerned. It _could_ be done, but
only if I get the time to do it. I've asked before about doing something
like this, and was given the "Sure…if you have time and want to play
around, go ahead". Hopefully, given my current schedule, I can get a
prototype going by Christmas.
If you'd like (and I'm allowed) I'll let you try out a version…when I get
something put together that is <grin>!!
Good Luck getting the HMI spec from CIS. I sent FEEDBACK a message only
two days ago about the lack, and got back a message saying they really
couldn't afford to write CIM for the Amiga (they simply do NOT understand)
