OK, AMIUTL is great! But the archive is missing 2 crucial pieces of
information: 1) what is the shareware fee and where should it be sent and
2) where are the docs?
Specifically, a)once the screen is iconified how do you restore it?
b) what are the exclamation points for in the path requestor?

Michael:
I don't know where the docs are but:
a) you have to make sure the iconify window is active (just left click on
it) and then right click on it to bring the main window back up.
b) the exclamation point buttons "re-read" the current directory (handy if
you're adding files to the current directory with some other program and
AUII doesn't know about it).

can anyone tell me how, when I program in one of the blank buttons, ie with
ctrl-lmb, how I get the command to act on the selected file?
for example, run, or edit?

Basically, you highlight a file (or mulitple files) in the selection
windows and then if you place an "*" in the programmed command, AmigaUtil
will insert the full path and file name of each highlighted entry into the
command before sending it to the CLI. For example, if the command were "arc
-x *", and you highlighted 3 arc'd files, the program would insert their
names in place of the "*", one at a time, and then process the commands
until it runs out of highlighted files. bad example, since the program has
special provisions for Arc, Zoo and LHarc, but you get the idea.

Thanks Gary. How did you know that? Well, however you did, it did the
trick. Terriffic piece of work and, now that I know that, it would appear
extremely flexible. Do you happen to know (while I'm at it) If there is a
configuration file, or equivalent, so as to allow easy adjustment of the
display? Anyway, thanks again for the info. MK
I'm always on the hunt down for a cool disk management tool as I'm one of
those people that thinks running a command line on a GUI like the Amiga's
is kind of a contradiction (CLI users are invited to hold their tongues!
I've been through the CLI vs. Workbench arguement too many times!) I've
tried about 10 or more PD disk utilities and have been terribly
disappointed most of the time; Disk Master was the best until AmigaUtilII
(it still does things AmigaUtil doesn't so I haven't tossed it completly
(yet!). The config file for AmigaUtil is kept in your s: directory.
Unfortunately, you can't really edit it as it contains a mish-mash of text
and binary code. Ah well.
ditto. I'm disappointed to hear that I can't configure AU (Hint). It would
be nice to be able to turn off the .info files, and do a bunch of the other
stuff SID and the others can. Sure is the prettiest of the bunch and I
love the idea of being able to program in all those banks of buttons. What
can Disk Master do that the PD won't?
Have you guys tried MegaD? It is here in disk utilities. It is
configurable (somewhat) and runs under both 1.3 and 2.0. I haven't found
anything better, but I haven't tried SID or AU.

I've tried MegaD and I've found that there's just too many damn windows in
the thing! It's hard enough getting used to fast exchanges between 2
windows the same size, but an infinite #?!? Yeeesh! It's also not too hot
on programmability, as I recall, but I could be wrong about that.

Disk Master has a nice feature for updating the dates and protection bits
automatically across a pile of files (this is handy for me since when I
assemble one of our commercial disks, I hate having all the different dates
for the files show up… picky, I know, but there you go). It also is much
faster when moving alot of files from a big directory to another, since it
only re-reads the destination directory AFTER all the files have been
moved. AmigaUtilII re-reads the dest directory after every move. On 2
directories with a couple hundred files, this procedure will take… well,
lets say you might as well go for a coffee in the interum. Little things
like that. DM does however suck pretty bad in the configurable function
button dept! :).
And another thing – I found that when I unpack files, the unpacked files do
not end up in the same sub directory as the .lzh file. Invariably they end
up in the root directory. That neveer happens with SID. Plus, when I
selecte the button to re-read dh0:, it won't read the newly unpacked files
until I actually exit AM UT and then re start. Does that happen to you or
am I crazy? These little things are going to drive me toward something
else. 🙂 MK

L'see. I beleive all the program-supported archive programs (that is, arc,
zoo and lharc, which there are menu entries for) get unpacked to whatever
directory is set in the OTHER window. In other words, say you have an .LZH
file in DH0: in the left window and you want to unpack it to your floppy,
DF0: Just bring DF0: up in the right window. As well, you re-read
directories by clicking the "!" buttons, not by just pressing the directory
button again. I believe it keeps 3 or 4 directories in memory and it has no
way of knowing if anything has been added to it or not. If in doubt, press
the "!" buttons. Does that solve your problems?

Gary, I figured out about why AU wasn't showing the unpacked files.
Operator error. However, have you any ideas re: why the files are
decompressing into my root directory in the first place? Mark
Did you get your mailing reguarding DiskMaster? There is a new version
that is supposed to kill ANYTHING commercial, PD, or shareware. You are
not limited to two windows. You can have several windows of different
sizes. There is supposed to be easier picture/sound/text
viewing/listening. Again, if you got the flyer you'll know what I mean.
Upgrade to DiskMaster is $25 which includes shipping and no return of
origional disk is needed. You get a brand new manuel explainning
everything in detail plus extensive info on using ARexx with the program.
No, I didn't get any flyer about an upgrade to DM. I thought they'd
consigned it to a shallow grave years ago! Must get on to PPS about that.

DiskMaster in a shallow grave? Give PPS a call and you'll see what I
mean. I wanted to order version 2.0 right then and there but they said
registered owners would get a mailing in about 3 weeks. Sure enough, I got
the mailing Thursday and all they told be about was there and more. The
latest revision I had was 1.4 which added AmigaDOS 2.0 compatibility and
tightened up the program a bit. They, apparently, have been looking at
other directory utilities.

Yup, the last version I have for DiskMaster is 1.3. Didn't think they'd
ever do anything else with it. I'll definitely give them a call.
