I think you said the other day that Workbench 2.0 would allow icons to
be displayed even for files without ".info files". Right?
Well, my friendly local Amiga store says Workbench 2.0 is not available,
and also did not have any idea how much an upgrade might cost.
I also gather that updating the Workbench is a major (read messy) operation,
probably more so on my friend's system, since she has "Super Drive"s and
other stuff stuck to the side of her machine.
Can you clarify any of this (dollars, dates, etc.) ???
I'm going to the libraries after I /EXIT this message, but I'm going to
ask anyway: What and where is SID?

I don't think that WB 2.0 will show ICONS for files without corresponding
.info files, but it will show the file NAMES.

WB 2.0 WILL indeed allow you to view all files in a directory as icons,
even if they do not have an .info file. This is activated by a pull down
menu on the workbench… The menu looks like this:
SHOW
ONLY ICONS
ALL FILES VIEW BY
ICON
FILENAME
When you choose to SHOW ALL FILES by ICON, you can drag & drop every file
in the selected directory just as if it had a permanent icon.
Even more useful is 2.0's ability to let you show each directory by name in
alphabetical order… and DRAG THE FILENAME!

if you select SHOW ALL from the menu. You can also choose to have it show
names instead.

The one thing WB 2.0 doesn't do in its SHOW ALL FILES/VIEW BY NAME mode
is list .info files. I really wish you could toggle that ON/OFF, because I
often delete icons without deleting the corresponding files. Oh well,
gotta use the Shell for something, eh? 8^)

David… use the shell to delete .info files? How about using AmiUtl? I
aslo just saw an ARexx script somewhere that batch deletes .info files…
but I can't remember where…(magazine?)

Well, I could always use Browser (haven't heard of AmiUtl before) but
I'd prefer to use Workbench. The fewer environments I have to deal with,
the better. I've never cared much for dirutils; I've been primarily a CLI
(WShell actually) user before getting WB 2.0. Writing an ARexx script
isn't a bad idea…I could make it interactive with a bit of effort.

Bob Rakosky just pointed out to me that the file I couldn't remember was
announced yesterday in this forum… so you should be able to find that
arexx script in the new uploads area.

Actually, the ARexx script to which you refer (to delete .info files)

2.0 should be available within the next couple of months. What kind of
machine does your friend have? If it's an A1000, it will be a "messy"
operation. If it's an A500 or A2000, it will be a simple matter of having
your dealer replace the ROM chip and copy some new system files over to her
Supra Drive.

No, I can't really give info on dollars or dates. For the A500/A2000 the
upgrade will be a matter of changing a rom chip, and installing all the new
workbench files onto your SYS: partition of your hard disk. (application
software may have to be reinstalled, or at least their special entries in
the startup-sequence and/or mountlist will have to be reinstalled)
There are a number of programs that provide a point and click text based
interface for moving files, copying files, etc..
