Thank you for your help. I think the downloading process works, but I am
unable to find out because I don't know how to use the files I have
downloaded. I'll explain again: I own an A500, AmigaTerm software, 1MB, 1
internal drive, no hard drive. Before downloading, I did as you said(8N1),
initiated send, and waited 45 minutes for the program to load(1200 baud).
The program is CHEMES.LZH, a molecular modeling program that sounds really
useful by its description. I assigned it a filename of JTB1:/CHEMES.LZH
using XMODEM and it was unable to create a file('XMODEM unable to create
file' flag). Of course, the transmission failed. I was finally sucessful at
downloading most of the file by reassigning the filename to simply
CHEMES.LZH , but I was only able to use my AmigaTerm disk to download the
file but the disk became full after 1033 blocks of info loaded! This is
very frustrating. I would like some information on downloading to another
disk, and using the program once I have it on disk. Thank you very much.

I suspect the reason why the download failed is because the filename you
gave (JTB1:/CHEMES.LZH) is not a legal Amiga file name.
By simply using CHEMES.LZH, the file downloaded to your current directory,
which was clearly your AmigaTerm disk.
You had the right idea, I think, but just got a little detail wrong.
I assume you have a disk called "JTB1", which as your rightly typed, is
given with a colon at the end. However, to specify a file in the root
directory of this disk, you simply need to use JTB1:CHEMES.LZH … the
slash is only used to separate directory names in a path. If, for instance,
on your JTB1 disk, you had a directory called "downloads", you might use
JTB1:downloads/CHEMES..LZH.
In other words, logical device names, volume names, directory names and
filenames are separated by either a colon (for volumes and devices) or a
slash (directories and filenames)

You are really close. Assuming that the disk you want to download to is
named "JBT1:", you should use the filename "JBT1:CHEMES.LZH" — note that
there is no slash ('/') character there. That's what caused your first
problem.
Do you know about 'archived' files? Most of the files we have in our
libraries are archived, which you can tell by the suffix on the file name.
For example, the file you want, CHEMES.LZH, is an archived file which needs
the LHARC file to unarchive it before you can use it (that's what the .LZH
suffix means). You can find LHARC in Library 5 here, as file name
LHARC.EXE. This file is not archived, and can be run as downloaded.
There's another file in Library 5 that is recommended if you're not
familiar with the various archive programs. This file, ARCHLP.EXE, will
provide you with a tutorial on how to use the archive programs. Highly
recommended.

Please use B protocol instead of XModem. AmigaTerm supports CompuserveB,
and it is MUCH nicer and is faster, too.
To use it, set AmigaTerm for Compuserve B. When you are ready to download,
have your disk handy to accept the download before you start. When you are
at the Disposition! prompt, type DOW PROTO:B (or QB if you have QuickB –
I'm not sure which AmigaTerm has). This tells Compuserve you want to
DOWnload, using QuickB protocol. Compuserve will then ask:
Filename to use for your computer. You answer:
JTB1:CHEMES.LZH
Your computer should then prompt you to insert volume JTB1:, and once it is
in the drive, the download should come to that disk automatically.
After you have the file on your disk, you will have to unpack it using
LHARC.EXE from Library 5. This file (LHARC.EXE) was made so that it could
be downloaded and used immediately. If you need help with it, please ask.
And do let us know how your downloads come along.
There is something else you might want to do. It is expensive to practice
here when you are just learning to download. CompuServe has set up a forum
where you can learn without having to pay connect time charges. You get
there by typing GO PRACTICE, and you can practice doing everything that we
can do in this forum until you are at ease with it all. Then, everything
you learned there will work the same way here and in all the other forums
on CIS. There are lots of files in their library that will help you get
more for your money on CIS, too.
