#UNSIT & StuffIT 1.6
11 messages in this thread
Jim, I can see a problem happening soon for Amiga users and the .SIT
archive format. There is a new version of StuffIT being used, StuffIT
DELUXE. It is commercial and the shareware version is called StuffIT
Classic. Both of them create a different file format than the older 1.51
version of it. UNSIT comes back with a "BAD MAC HEADER" complaint when you
try and unstuff these v1.6 archives. I've been looking for a newer version
of UNSIT but haven't been successful, have you heard of a newer version
that handles both the 1.51 and 1.6 versions of the StuffIT archive program?

No, I haven't heard of one. And people generally suggest the unstuffing be
done on a mac before porting over. Luckily, macs are not in short supply.
But I hope some kind sould writes an up to date unstuffit. New Horizons
might consider it!
Most odd, I got a Sharewhere unstuffit deluxe from Genie, and it works 100%
of the time on all the new stuffit formats on my A3000 with amax partition
and system 6.0.3 and 6.0.4
I can upload it here if you guys like.

I would certainly be interested in a new Amiga Stuffit extractor. I
currently use UnSit 0.9, which doesn't unsit quite a few Mac files to be
found elsewhere on CIS.

It's not an Amiga Stuffit extracter, I belive I must have mis-read your
message. It is unstuffit deluxe that runs on the Mac/Amax. I use it with
A-max II. Sorry!
Tim
Shucks … that's too bad!
There are many useful MAC files in .SIT (and other "non-standard") archive
formats which it seems so unfortunate that we can't unarc. When we're
talking about software, then there's not so much a problem … but when
we're talking about data (such as fonts, or PostScript or even just text
files) then why a community shouldn't adopt a standard that works across
the main range of machines (which I would classify as MAC, IBM, Amiga and
Atari) is something I can never understand.
Ho Hum

The Amiga author of unsit has no intention of updating the program, even if
paid for it, so it'll be up to somebody else to do the work.

I think that is rather sad … is the source available, or are the
specs/algorithms of the latest StuffIt available?
Once again, the abandonment of standards :-((((

Latest version I have is 0.9. When Scott Everndon was working on it, I
remember asking him about update plans, and I vaguely remember exchanging
Easyplex e-mail with the Mac author of Stuffit. Also, you can try to reach
the author of the PC version of "unsit", which has been updated to handle
the newer formats. Yes. The PC version is now at version 3.0, and his name
is Brian Uechi, at CIS 72330,155.
RE: Macs not in short supply. Maybe for some of us, but if AMAX is on the
system, no problem, just download StuffIT Classic, and forget about UNSIT,
but, it is convenient to have around. Saves rebooting.
