#Credit Card Reader

Does anyone have, or know where I can get, a CREDIT CARD READER? I've
called CBM but got the standard line "See your dealer". My local merchants
seem willing to help but apparently are at a loss to dig one up – I daren't
ask about a driver for the darn thing.
Anyhow, hopefully one of you kind folks has a hook.
Also, if anyone knows anything about driving a CCR please let me know.

Funny enough, I was flipping through PC World a couple of days ago, and
said, neat, a credit card reader for RS-232 ports…
Seems to be two sources:
* American Microsystems – (800) 648-4452 – advertises a "mag stripe"
reader. Does not say anything about RS-232, though.
* Mag-Tek (213) 631-8602 – seems to be the much better bet.
Advertises an RS-232 reader, and shows a "VisaCard" sliding through their
device. However, this device is probably being directed at PC's or ASCII
terminals, so the chances of these folks having Amiga drivers is really
doubtful. It shouldn't be difficult for you to read the serial port at the
incoming information, however.
NOW, since I've given you something, how about telling me about you
project, and about what you folks do. Would appreciate the reply.

First of all…Thanks for the info. It'll save me quite a bit of time.
A driver would be nice but we can always figure something out. (Just hate
to re-invent the wheel – If you know what I mean.) The important thing is
that we get an idea of what the doggone thing costs, and whether it'll do
what we want.
Which brings me to what we do… Elcash stands for "Electronic Catalog
Showrooms" and while I can't (under non-disclosure) divulge any details
about current projects. Suffice to say that we're a small development
company taking our first rides on the commercial Multi-Media bandwagon.
Previous projects have included Flight Planning Systems, Passenger Briefing
Systems and other aviation related goodies.
Alot of our work is strictly IBM, but as an Amiga partisan since '85 I'm
anxious to see if we (…all us partisans, that is.) can't break the Amiga
into the mainstream with it's Multi-Media capabilities.
Should be fun…Huh?

You can usually find plenty of credit card readers, bar code card readers
and wands, etc. in any catalog of supplies for retailers. I'm sure I still
have some around our store.
You're biggest problem will be if you plan on using it with your Amiga.
Most of them are designed for use on dos machines. I.e. our bar code
reader interfaces between the keyboard and pc and sends the translated
codes to the pc as keystrokes. This prolly wouldn't work on an Amiga
unless you have one of the adaptors for using a PC keyboard on an Amiga.
If you can't find a source for this stuff, let me know and I'll dig up some
companies for you to contact.
OTOH, if you're looking for a real do it yourself job, companies like All
Electronics commonly have readers very inexpensively, but they have no
powersupplies, cases and usually very minimal documentation. That's the
problem with surplus equipment.
