Is 1.1 the latest revision for Imagine?

When I last spoke to Mike at Impulse (the programmer, not the boss) he said
that they were thinking of adding control of the VD-1 into Light24 in a
similiar way to the way they're going to control the Epson scanner. Have
you heard any more about this? I sure would like to be able to throw away
the Digi, Freeze, Live, VDZ programs and do it all within Light24! Also,
will the release version be usable from the WB as well as the CLI or will
it still be CLI only like the version that came with the FC24?
Mike, I haven't heard about any VD1 support, but I sure would like a reason
to keep that old beast around. –Rick

If you'd really like to keep the VD1 around, then make sure and let them
know, as I know they were (might still be) considering it. Personally I
like the VD1 both as a digitizer, as well as a display unit (of course,
it's not as nice as the FC24 for output, but it's as good as any other NTSC
output device), although if they do support the VD1 in Light24 it'd
probably be as an input only device. 🙁
Joshua, 1.1 is the latest version of Imagine. But there is a note in Louis
Markoya's 'MapMaster for Image' product (well worth purchasing, BTW) which
states that if you are using an early FP version of Imagine 1.1, there is a
potentially fatal bug that you can run across with Altitude mapping. If
your Imagine 1.1 FP program is 483,764 bytes long then you have the OLD
version, and should request the new version. Send back the orignal disk
and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Impulse and they'll send you the
corrected version.
BTW, the length of the corrected Imaging 1.1 FP program is 483,772 bytes.

I wish someone had mentioned this bug a few weeks ago! I went nuts
trying to figure out if it was just me or my machine or whatever! By the
way, the bug also exists in the Integer version of 1.1 shipped at the same
time.

Well, Glad it helped you. I don't really know what the bug was, except
what was described in the MapMaster manual. Never ran across it myself.

A friend of mine mentioned this bug to me after reading the stuff with Map
Master and I called Impulse up to get the scoop and was told there was no
bug and that I couldn't duplicate the problem if I tried. Hmmm. There is
no way I want to encounter this bug either!
Guess I'll just send my disk in attached to a wish list (like better phone
support).

Gee, better phone support from Impulse? Actually I've found their phone
support generally OK, but their WRITTEN support abysmal.
I've taken the time (at least three times over 1.5 years) to write succinct
letters to them, regarding: 1) upgrade availability to several products (I
didn't know if they had ever been upgraded, 2) bugs in existing programs ,
and 3) offering suggestions for their products. Never heard ONE word back
from them any time at all. I can understand their not caring about my
suggestions, but am disappointed that they cannot respond to basic
marketing questions from a pretty good customer. If they checked their
product registrations, they would find me plenty times! (not that it should
make any difference actually) Nuff griping.
Re the altitude mapping 'bug'. I have the 'old' version of Imagine,
according to the MapMaster notation (483,764 bytes). Cannot recall
crashing, even thougth I have used altitude mapping several times.
Obviously have not used it as much as L. Markoya, so maybe he has found
some 'occaisonal bug'. The fact that there is a 'new' version (at 483,772
bytes) gives credence to Louis's claim of a bug. I wonder why Impulse
denied it, rather than just saying to send in the disk?

Just FYI, my copy of ImagineFP is 483,920 bytes. I purchased it from my
dealer less than a month ago. I know that he didn't have it on his shelf
too long, so I'm assuming that it's the most recent version.
I've been very interested in purchasing both Surface Master and Map
Master. Are these products only available directly from Mr. Markoya, or
can my dealer get them for me? My local dealer is an authorized Amiga
dealer, but I also sometimes go up to Briwall, which is only a half-hour's
drive from my place.

Well! Another contender for the most current 'Imagine'. Maybe a call to
Impulse is in order here?
I'm not sure if MapMaster or SurfaceMaster is available from mail-order or
dealers, or just direct. You might leave Louis Markoya an EMail and ask
him for ordering info (price/address). His CIS ID is: 75766,504 They
are certainly worth having for any serious Imagine user. Saves ooodles of
time in figuring these things out! TTFN

Are we talking about the integer or floating point versions of Imagine
1.1? Some people are undoubtedly running Imagine on unaccellerated
machines. My integer version of 1.1 is 488212 bytes. The FP version is at
home right now.

Mark, everything so far has related to the FP version of Imagine. Don't
know about the integer version, except that someone else posted that it too
had the 'altitude' map problem.
I talked with Impulse yesterday, asking about this – is there a bug in
Imagine re altitude mapping? They answered they knew of none, but the
program has undergone several revisions (the 1.1 version, that is). If
anyone wants to make sure they have the most current, then mail your
original disk back to them, with a stamped return envelope, and they will
upgrade it to the most current version for free, and mail it back. Do
include the STAMPED return envelope though!
Hope above settles it. I don't know if there was a problem or not. I will
send my disk back, however, just to be sure 🙂

Thanks for the info. I will probably send my disk back to get the
latest revision as I plan to use the altitude mapping. I only use the FP
version but have the integer version on my machine at work (68000 only) for
some reason that escapes me now.

I've seen both Surface Master and Map Master at my dealer's. Or, you can
get them directly from Louis' company, Computer Imagery. Great products.

well, just to get my two cents in, I just recieved my copy of Imagine this
past Wednesday, and the FP version (1.1) file size is 484,052…
Do I win the prize!?!?! 🙂
I am planning on getting the video, since the manuals aren't much help…

Video is probably too introductory. I suggest you get Imagine companion or
Buddy System + Mapping and Surfacing is whole different ball game, Louis
Markoya's Map Master and Surface Master are good. You should look into one
of these instead of Video.

warning — I bought the Centaur videotape ("Imagine: a guided tour") and
was disappointed. It's strictly a beginner-type tutorial, and I can't
recall seeing anything worthwhile that wasn't covered in the Tutorial
manual. Rick's tape, however, is chock full of tips and important
information for the user who knows his way around Imagine and would like to
start putting its myriad features through their paces. Both tapes have a
place in this world, but to be honest the Centaur tape is basically a
rehash of the manual. I turned around and sold it pronto.

yep, I've heard the same thing from others… that the video is kinda
basic… I've ordered The Imagine Companion and am looking forward to
getting it!!

Jim, remember that there are two tapes available for Imagine. Impulse
only sells my video "Imagine: the Possibilities, Vol. 1," which is
quite advanced. Vol. 2 will focus on animation and should be available
by year's end along with Imagine 2.0.

Dan, the bug in this very early version of 1.1 is esoteric. I only
encountered it when attempting to use Lou's MapMaster files. If you don't
intend to do multiple altitude brush mapping, don't sweat it. If you
intend to purchase MapMaster and emulate Lou Markoya's master works, then
by all means get the new revision. –Rick
