Hi, I am new to this forum. I have an Amiga and am very interested
in computer animation and art. As such, I am also interested in the other
brands of computers and the art they produce (even though I believe the
Amiga to be the best).
Can anyone tell me what hardware/software combination produces
graphic files with the extentions ".pcx" and ".pic". I'm in need of a
conversion program to transfer these to Amiga ".iff". I downloaded files
with those extentions from MS-DOS (pronouced; "a mess doss") dominant BBSs
that are local to my area.

First off, welcome, -you'll be having a lot of fun here. As to
conversion- Adpro (Art Department Professional) is an excellent image
manipulation package that also supports most file conversions.
pcx (for pcpaintbrush) for sure, I expect they have a .pic module also.
ImageLink is also an excellent program that supports conversions from
(practicaly) anything to anything. No special hardware required, though
you might want to look into the HamE board from black belt systems.
Relitively inexpensive, allows 24-bit image manipulation and has conversion
utilities. Check out their forum over in AmigaVendor.
I'll second the comment about getting ADPro (Art Department Professional)
by ASDG. It will convert between most other computer formats and all amiga
formats. Will do other image processing as well.
PCX is a IBM format; most IBM/clone graphics packages will save/load in
that format. It supports varying degrees of resolution and color, some of
which are directly transferable to IFF, some of which are not (but ADPro
will scale and dither them so that they are usable in any case).
I don't know the .PIC format…. maybe someone else does….

The .PIC format is a bit arcane. I believe that Lotus graphics have the
.PIC designation (these are structured graphics), and that Micrografx has a
bitmap type that also uses the .PIC designation. Are you possibly
confusing this with PICT, which is a Mac format?
At any rate, if ADPro will not do what you want, you can try Hijaak on
the PC. It will translate between most known formats, even some fax
formats. However, I am not sure how current their .IFF support is (if they
support anything besides normal Amiga modes).
Thanks for the info on the .PIC format. Now I remember – it was the Lotus
and such that had that extension.
