re: "ROTO.BAT"
You need the following line as the first line of your ROTO.BAT file:
@ECHO OFF
This will prevent messages from going to the screen. Otherwise the 3D
Studio screen will get messed up.
Diaquest has a file called FLDCOPY.COM which will copy one video field to
another. This will get rid of much flicker and aliasing in rotoscoping.
Diaquest is working on Chroma Key capture using the TARGA+ chroma key
hardware. Contact Diaquest sales for more info.
DIAQUEST TECH SUPORT
Bill, sorry Diaquest DOES NOT have the FLDCOPY.COM file! Though it is
mention in my new manual, the file is NOT in the software I just purchased.
A follow up call to Diaquest confirmed this. They are addressing that issue
now. BTW, I did not have any prolbem w/o the @echo off. In fact with my QFX
Batch files I ECHO what is happening as it is happening. Just to provide
additional documentation.
The Chroma Key capture sounds good. BTW I had great sucess in rotoscoping,
with both OPACITY mapping and using the Video Post module. (Queue Alpha
channel) I wrote another batch file to make OPACITY maps using Ron Scott's
Hi Rez QFX. The simple test I performed; was video taping my hand, against
a black backgrd (crushed velvet). I then mapped and applied the rotoscoping
to a 3DS flat plane created in the shaper and then imported into the
editor. The results were; fingers moving, and my entire hand rotating, (by
rotating the 3DS plane\Keyframer) over a cloud backgrd. It looks great. So
if you have HI RES QFX, and if you don't you should, you can get great
results just with the object on a black backgrd.
If you would like additional information on this I can upload more,
including additional batch files.

Steve, make sure you get the field-filtering program from Diaquest. It
helps a LOT!
It sounds like you're getting more and more good information about the
rotoscoping process. Feel free to update your description in DL9 with more
information like this in the future. You can easily change a file in the
Data Libraries without having to re-enter the description and keywords.
It's really great to see information like this… keep it up!

I can append more info to the current rotoscoping process. How do I change
the file in the data library without re-entering the description?
I will proceed with Diaquest to get the Field-filtering file from them.
They are not distributing this as they say,"there are so many frame buffers
to support" I will bend their arm!
My lastest plan for my future rotoscoping will be to have the runner on a
flat reflection map, I was impressed with this mapping. In addition I am
planning to put a full 3d environment around this with an additional
rotoscoping process mapped onto the inside of the environment. I conducted
alot of tests this weekend, and experimented with spheres and boxes, I
perfered the box. I also put another 3DS object above the flat reflection
map and applied a "NOISE .SXP" to it, looked great! I am caught in this 3D
funnel and the more I explore the further I get pulled into the funnel.
Learning alot!

I think you can change the file in the DL by just UPLoading to the same
filename. The system ought to prompt you as to whether or not you want to
replace the existing file.
It sounds like you're really getting into 3DS more deeply and having a lot
of fun. Great!

G, Thanks for that info. I spent most of this weekend running tests.
Experimenting with flat reflection mapping, putting additional objects
above the reflection maps. Discovering what "MAKEIFL" is used for. In fact,
now I can have the 3DS environment, which I will use as a box, mapped
(planar) with rotoscoped GIF files onto the walls of the box, reflecting
into the flat reflection map. Whew!!!
I am impressed on how well this program interfaces with batch files and
these external process. A JOB WELL DONE!!!
I did not think I would get so involved with computer(s), in fact this 3DS
program has challenged me to learn about batch files, interfacing with QFX,
and communicating with other members on CIM. How can you put a price on
that! So much to learn and so little time.
Just a quick tip for those of you who are reminded about how much time you
are spending with the computer and not your significant other, during those
rendering periods, grab the vacum cleaner and tidy up, works wonders!
Goodnight

hehe… Great suggestion about making best use of your time while the
computer is crunching numbers. I learned a couple of years ago about how
valuable it is to have time when the computer is working to unlink and get
back into the real world. These days, I try to set up a big shot before
the weekend so I can take the time off from work, but still feel like I'm
getting something done! (is that cheating?)
