#animator ega ?
6 messages in this thread
I am conidering ordering the ANIMATOR being offered by Surplus Software for
$59. (recent PC Mag ad). Question: is there any way I can use the software
on a 286 with EGA ? Al;l the info I've read says no, VGA only- but I wonder
if that refers to PLAYBACK requiring VGA. Can I run the tools, eg PAINT,
animate etc on EGA ? Anybody have any experience with this offer ? Tne
dealer says it is the full retail package, V1.01. I'd like to get my hands
on some animation, even 3D if possible. By the way, does Animator do 3D ?
Im alittle incertain about just what each Autpodesk product does do …
Thansk for any info. Scott
Scott,
The old animator V1.01 is now part of a package called mutlimedia explorer.
It only supports VGA in "low res" 320×200 x 256 colors. It will NOT work on
EGA. Animator Pro is a higher end product that allows any resultion your
card is capable of as long as a driver is available (Super VGA drivers are
included for resolutions exceeding 1024×800). Animator Pro is only sold
through special dealers for Autodesk and you wont find it discounted any
from its $795 price. Anyhow, the point is moot since it wont support EGA.
Both packages are 2D. The autodesk product that does 3D is called 3D studio
and is sold through the same dealers (i.e. never discounted) for $2995!
Unlike animator and animator pro which only use 256 colors on the screen at
one time, 3D Studio is capable of truecolor output (i.e. 16 million colors,
though this requires a very expensive video card).
I just went through the mental excercise you are about to undertake. There
is NOTHING out there for a PC that even comes close to even the low-res
animator. For the advertised price you'd be getting a deal but would still
need to invest in a VGA card and monitor. After a few weeks of using
animator I hungered for the extra resolution and took the plunge for
animator Pro.
Maybe these are not the products you were looking for, but there is nothing
cheaper nor better in the same price range. In other words, animation on
the PC is rather expensive.
Good Luck

Ray,
I agree with you on all points except the discount issue. In my
area (LA, Ca) , at least, good discounts are plentiful on Anipro and 3ds –
it just depends on how many dealers there are in your area.
Martin
Martin,
I guess competition works in some areas. When I was looking I found nothing
but full retail from the dealers in Georgia.

Scott:
I would add that nothing you learn from using Animator will hurt you when
and if you want to move up to 'professional' resolutions and animations. I
highly recommend getting Animator to see if you want to go for the $795
package… Animator Pro.

Thanks Craig, and Ray- that echoes what Ive heard (all good) about AA. By
the way, I ran across a neat package for kids called CARTOONER which has
pre-drawn scenes and characters ("actors") plus music – makes it all very
easy to animate. Kind of like PrintShop for animation. My kids love it and
enjoy using it…. Scott.
